Seeing them tonight, pray for at least 3-4 Boxer songs for me

praying for fogza, may it be trodden unto him upon the lands of the fake empire of boxer-era national and not the very real empire of lucrative snooze-era national

Feel lucky I saw them play Green Gloves, Apartment Story, and Fake Empire in 2017.

don't want to sound too smug about it but I feel like I've watched them perform every song that matters at least once ;P

They should put Theory of the Crows back in the setlist

Good songs that got played: Fake empire, slow show, mistaken for strangers, apartment story, abel, cherry tree, England, bloodbuzz Ohio, green gloves, sea of love. I guess I can't complain, got my boxer heavy set. They also played a lot of twaddle from the new stuff, but it was ok overall

Kinda surprised how many people like smoke detector, it sucked live

i can def see smoke detector not translating well live despite the "live" vibe of the recording

I like ‘Walk it Back’ and quite like ‘Dark Side of the Gym’ but on the SWB tour they both bombed - massive rush to the bar/toilets when they started playing those snoozers
On the TWFM tour they played maybe ten songs from that album when I caught them and each was perfection for comparison
I do think some of the ‘Alligator’ material is slightly stodgy live…including (gasp) ‘All the Wine’. They seem to always play it between two bangers and it’s not living up to that.

Can't imagine all the wine bombing but I'll take your word for it. The songs that sort of surprised me were I'll still destroy you and Dreaming, better than I expected.

Mid but ok for me was Swallow the cap (yeah I don't think that song is as great as everyone else does), system, demons

Those three are all great for me, think last time I saw them they opened with ‘Cap’ and it hit hard
‘All the Wine’ never bombs, it’s a singalong favourite, but it just sounds a bit limp compared to a lot of rest, bit of a plodder for me
Imagine you’re in the middle of a great Radiohead set and then they play ‘Creep’…just a bit “yup”
A bit of a relic

Yeah I remember we see alligator very differently, I am, when it comes to the national, that guy who is a Luddite. Most of the rest of the set just felt very samey and dull, like retreaded parts of better songs.

They also played pink rabbits which I think is a truly clunky song and it was even worse live

‘Abel’ and ‘Mr November’ are good live, ‘City Middle’ and ‘Geese’ are welcome…beyond that I don’t really want anything from’Alligator’ in a live set, even ‘Secret Meeting’ didn’t fully work when I saw them do that one. Not sure.
Does show why bands get to that point they have to roll out all the hits, everyone has their own favourite era

This was a sad experience though, I bet if I saw them in 2010 it would have been something I'd never forget, but only seeing fake empire had that magic, that really special transcendent feeling. I'm grateful they played that one at least

Their 2010 show was my favourite live experience of all time, but I was also loved up too which might have helped
