"I can't be the only one who's sick of all this masturbatory prog smooth jazz bullshit in death metal"

rofl. I admit I don't like when old schook death metal acts go all in with prog elements in a seemingly trendy fashion, but I do like bands that experiment to avoid stagnancy.

I just feel this band had more to offer in their not so proggy sound, but maybe this leads to a greater development in the future. Who knows... All I can say is that I prefer their previous two efforts over this any day.

Mids. The music on this album has no voice of its own. It sure does boom boom bang bang zzziuuu da da da though which i guess is fun if you don’t need personality in your music

Counter-perspective: this album doesn’t know how to be itself

Nah, it’s a few different influences cobbled together with nothing unique to say (yet). I think they’ll nail it on the next one!

Horrendous, Blood Incantation and Tomb Mold are the holy trinity of this "masturbatory prog smooth jazz bullshit in death metal" for me right now and I will add Imperial Triumphant just to annoy people who think this actually sucks.

At this point Horrendous and Blood Incantation (judging by the single) are on another level

Imperial Triumphant play on a league of their own. They are on a personal quest aiming way beyond the prog realm, they are creating something completely new, so the "avant-garde" or "art" tag would suit them better I think. Not saying they are better than Horrendous or Blood Incantation, but simply playing different sports. That being said, this is a step below the aforementioned bands in terms of originality and consistency imho.

Pretty good picks fcourse, gotta hear more of Defeated Sanity.

I feel Ad Nauseam are just on a different path (dissodeath, etc) while the three I mentioned are leaning more and more into melody.
