I certainly dont understand the critics about this saying this lack dynamics that made the "previous albums" (the trilogy) better in their eyes. It has dynamics, but more in the subtleties . I prefer it to Leaving meaning for sure.
Probably his more introspective album. It does feel like his Blackstar
Edit : Maybe subtleties wasnt the right word, but I still stand that this has dynamics

Definitely, although I wouldn't even say this is more subtle. Feels like Swans' most immediately and obviously impressive release since The Seer.

lol in no universe is this more obviously impressive than To Be Kind. that record's prioritisation of old school pigfuck menace over doomy theatrics has always had the edge over the Seer

does this album beggar belief
I can't bring myself to listen because I imagine this is longer than Avatar 2 Way of the Weed

Slower does not always mean more subtle
TBK was very difficult to get into and even harder to remember. It's far more subtle than this one's folky melodies and smooth finish.

"does this album beggar belief"
it is survivable and borderline worthwhile if you embrace the tongue in cheek o-woe! o-senility! factor and probably insufferable if you confront it head on
and idk, never found TBK or reunion Swans in general particularly subtle nor thought they needed to be - clicked with that record straight away, thought it wore its brimstone front and centre

Or maybe doomy theatrics are just easier for me to get into

'lol in no universe is this more obviously impressive than To Be Kind'
the glowing man excretes its majestic phosphorescence all over the hobo beggar as well

Ok I'm just going to cut the BS and come clean: I remember absolutely nothing about Leaving Meaning or The Glowing Man, despite making an appreciable effort with both, and the only memorable part of To Be Kind is the creepy "I'm just a little boy" line. This album is instantly more memorable than all three of those albums combined.

I don't remember that at all. I listened to it a ton the year it came out and some the year after. So... it's been 8 years lol maybe I owe it another spin. But JUST SAYING.

We listen to Swans for that 'one moment'?
One moment in two hours?
This might explain my low ratings, I fall asleep before the moment. Been doing it wrong.

gotta hand it to the man, m. gira has a convenient habit of taking 5 minutes to hammer out his 'moments' once they appear

I feel like this is the most glittery and sparkly Swans album in ages. I don't understand some of the critiques here lol.

2nd listen in, no doubt weakest modern era Swans. Tracks 1, 9, 11 do nothing for me, tracks 2-5 just sound like lost tracks from white light/love of life era swans, Ebbing is like a fragment from great annihilator on repeat, and the beggar lover is just a mish mash of old songs patched together but it does have its moments. The album feels ponderous with little life or energy. I can feel it literally sucking the life out of me by about half way.

Don’t know what some of y’all are on about. This album exudes sparkle and that mesmerizing Swans’ sheen. Maybe you must bring the hammer down to break your wings. Anyway, album has 3.9 (equal to 4.2 here) on RYM w 2.2k ratings so far

3.9? jfc trust rym to bootlick any rock music with the faintest hint of oblique high-nosery
their having Michael Is Done as the joint-highest rated track says it all
