So far this is my front runner for AOTY for me.

This whole album is something else.

Ehh, right now there's a pretty big divergence for me between the highs (Misericorde I&II) and lows (Suspyre, Graal). Maybe I need more spins, but doubt I'll land in 4.5 in territory.

never understood how people consider NeOb overproduced. it's technical death metal that needs clarity and sounds beautiful. still has plenty of dynamic range and such.

It wasn't overproduced in past albums. Well maybe Urn, idk. But PoI sounds great.

band is amazing live. Truly an amazing experience BUT I just can't listen to their albums.

Not a lot on the first 3 songs really sticks out to me. Just because it's slightly symphonic and has pretty violins doesn't really elevate it in the songwriting department. I like some of the guitar solos though especially on the 3rd track damn. However... Suspyre and Graal SLAP, I think they're really solid when they're more aggressive and the triumphant parts are kind of lame.

It's because they can't out-triumph stuff like Forget Not, Plague Flowers, Black Noise, and Blackholes, no matter how hard they try. I agree that they sound better these days when they go hard.
This is really good on first listen, but maybe only slightly better than Urn. They're never gonna top Portal.

How is Urn overproduced? It has one of the worst mixes/drum kicks I have ever heard

I think of overproduction as being synonymous with bad mixing and sound. Like, things are too compressed, synthetic-sounding, mechanical, lifeless. Drum hits are clearly replaced, instruments clip, vocals are obviously processed/tuned, etc.
I remember an All Songs Considered episode where the subject was time-editing and how if things are unnaturally perfect, your brain starts to tune them out -- like how you stop hearing that clock in the corner, or a turn signal that's left on. I don't hear that on this album, but it does make a lot of sense on the topic of over-producing something.
