Hooboy well that took a nosedive — ‘oil’ and ‘tired influencer’ had me wondering if this could be a decent album doomed to some post-zeitgeist bias . . . but it’s a tired little album and took quite a nosedive after those initial four tracks (two of which were themselves annoying to begin with)

Funny how everybody is latching onto different tracks. I very much dislike Oil haha

I think this is their best since Plastic Beach. Singles were great and probably the best here, but there's nothing too bad on here. Yeah, they don't have their sardonic edge anymore but the tunes are still quality. You'd be hardpressed to find any act have their edge for as long as the Gorillaz have been around, best you can hope for are good tunes and they still deliver on that front

Pots has it lol this shit sounds like a c grade dua lipa knockoff, they've completely lost any semblance of an identity apart from Cracker Island which could have made for a solid deep cut on one of the last three

Can we just take a moment to reflect on how good they used to be? Their first three albums all slap very hard to this day

i listened to it for the second time just now. I can't remember a single fucking thing.

Even if I thought these were good tunes I would never agree to this at all. I don’t lower my expectations of quintessential artists as time progresses that’s ridiculous. There are many artists who have maintained a standard throughout long careers or have known when to stop and move on, and that’s something I really respect.
But the biggest problem I guess is that I don’t agree they are good tunes, I think they are mostly terrible, and not just by Gorillaz standards… I mean terrible in general.

Yeah gyro demon days damn near plays like a greatest hits album (minus that janky opening trio +all alone/white light but shhhhhhh), and Plastic Beach is loaded with bangers too. Gorillaz used to be able to come up with songs as brilliant and dynamic as Empire Ants and then not even release them as singles

Plastic beach came out the year I graduated high school I have so many core memories that revolve around it

I figured this would have some element of world building or storytelling but if there is it’s not very apparent

Gorillaz decided that concepts were too ahrd

there's not a cut on this album better than pirate jet

There isn’t a cut on here worthy of even sniffing pirate jets feet
