Damn I hadnt listened to this since last february, so im giving this a listen now and realizing that this is probably one of their best albums. I think I like it more than MAYH, and about as much as GR. BwP and Still Life are definitely superior, but this is a brilliant album.

this used to be my favorite Opeth album and like in my top 10 albums of all time. but looking back now, the songwriting is rather sloppy in parts, though the atmosphere is great and Advent is a killer song.

I don't own any Opeth albums. Suckage. The trouble is deciding which one to get first when you don't exactly have a job.

I wouldn't say it's sloppy so much as it's just some riffs have that "let's put this riff in here because it sounds awesome even though it doesn't really fit feel." The thing is that the riffs are awesome and the atmosphere is killer so this is still one of my favorite albums of all time.

To Bid You Farewell is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard in the prog rock/metal genre.
The fretless bass is incredible!

Hmm my least favourite opeth album, tied with Orchid. The songs don't seem to be as well constructed or brilliant as on later releases.

This is next on my list.
After being fascinated by Blackwater I am going back and listening to all of Opeths albums. So far this really isnt anything special.

this has some of the best acoustic passages in all of music!

outside of To Bid You Farewell, most of their future acoustic parts are all far better, see Benighted and Dirge For November
|
| |
Yeah but what about Black Rose Immortal and The Night And The Silent Water? I'm a real sucker for nylon acoustics
