this is a huge step up from Sister Cities in every way, I'm happy to see the boys are back

The opinions for this thing are all over the place lol

I wonder if anyone else finds the melodrama of their later stuff a bit too much. Can't really explain it, because I love NCTH which is certainly far from subtle, but it feels like the drama is warranted there.

The biggest issue with this second "trilogy" is how melodramatic it is. No Closer to Heaven is my favorite album they've done and I really don't think it ever becomes overwrought or anything, but Sister Cities is mixed terribly and Soupy consistently sounds as if he is on the edge of tears -there's no sunlight that they let in at all.
Hum rights the ship in regard to his vocals, but there are definitely some moments that I feel like are a bit much. Summer Clothes is probably the most obvious example as it feels like they are really forcing the emotion behind it, I just don't really vibe with it at all. I'm still figuring out where it fits in their discography but I'm leaning towards a rough ranking of
NCTH>Suburbia>TGG>The Upsides>Hum>>Sister Cities>Get Stoked

100% agree with everything, including the ranking. Actually, I might prefer Sister Cities to this despite the terrible mix and slightly annoying vocals. Just like the songs better.

Ranking is close, I'd just put The Upsides ahead of TGG.
Still think TGG is overrated.

TGG is definitely a tad overrated. I think it's a "better" album than Suburbia but I enjoy Suburbia more, if that makes sense. People just really wanted to crown The Wonder Years and it was a sort of easy place to land when TGG was closing out the trilogy and had a ton of satisfying callbacks. For my money, I think NCTH is the album that people want TGG to be in terms of growth and being a watershed moment for the genre. It's just a damn shame they fucked up the order of the tracks on that one. Cigarettes and Saints is such an obvious closer

Really enjoying this. The Paris of Nowhere and Lost it in the Lights are two standout tracks for me.

"I'm growing out my hair because who gives a shit"
Hate that lyric so much. Hide it in the verse or something, sure, but repeating it several times in the choruses, ugh.

This album is weaker than Sister Cities.

one sad thing about this album is that it rarely demonstrates how absurdly good their drummer is

I'LL HAVE YOU KNOW THAT I ONLY ALMOST CRIED TWICE.
Not sure what to rate it yet, but it's gonna be up there, methinks.

Skip their first album Sowing, it's atrocious.

Even though there is some disconnect here, all that’s doing for me is making it a 4.5 instead of something higher. it’s some of their strongest songwriting ever as a collective and Dan has never sounded better
