Troy’s vocals are way over-compressed and hollow. It’s very distracting.

As a massive 5er fan of Mastodon I m entitled to say I was never a huge fan of Troy s vocals, mainly after cts. Yes that s just how good the instruments and the all band reallly is.

I think his voice has a really unique timbre that suits their music well. The production just ruins it on this album. The rest of the production doesn’t bother me as much, would be nice if the distortion was crunchier but that ends up being more subjective ultimately. Cymbals are over-compressed as well but it’s less distracting to me.
Sickle and Peace has to be one of their best songs since Crack the Skye.

For some reason all these guys sing in the band, yet they are really far from perfect or even good, except for Brann, which is too perfect lol. To love Mastodon ain t about the vocals imo

For sure, Troy and Brent in particular aren’t traditionally good at singing. You don’t necessarily need to be to fit the overall sound of a band, though. I’d argue that Mastodon wouldn’t work as well if Brann were the only vocalist, even if he’s clearly the strongest singer.

| |
i like all the vocalists. we've had enough examples in history that you don't need to be an amazing singer in the traditional sense
