I agree. Unfortunately, that doesn't make them worse than the instrumentals and creative ideas.

"The vocals aren't even the worst part. They're at least sort of competent"

It's not even the competency that's the problem for me. I just flat-out hate the fuck out of the tone and timbre of her voice

”the vocals sound like Halsey and Sia had an illegitimate child“

Exactly, which is why I’m having a hard time understanding the visceral reaction to it. It’s annoying and derivative sure, but is it really all that different from the stuff it’s trying to be like?

To me her voice is so much worse than either of theirs. I'm struggling to even find a point of comparison, for whatever reason it is a straight up nails on chalkboard thing for me.

The songwriting is really basic, which is fine because most pop music is the same, but the faux-badass, zero calorie Billie Eilish thing she has going on makes the lyrics, cadence, and delivery unbearable.

Comparing her singing to Halsey and Sia is ridiculously generous

pfff thats hilarious - i actually dipped into Spellling a bit after seeing Fantano's 10 and was absolutely turned off by the vocals. maybe slightly more bearable than Tones since Spellling is at least not trying to sound like Tommy fucking Pickles.

Spellling has the Macy Gray effect - obviously has incredible control over her voice and can sing, but it is off-putting to a lot of people because of how she utilizes that talent.

also my 60-something y/o coworker went out of his way to show me Dance Monkey after having already heard it before and I didn't have the heart to tell him how vile i thought the song was.

"Unless every other song on this is significantly worse than Dance Monkey I don't get why this is averaging 1.2" thank you

pretentious nerd that is basically so far from who Hip Hop and Rock and Roll was made for, aside from having no sense of humour and being cringey of course. I wish him no ill will though as I don't know him.
