Great review, kinda hits the nail on the head for me. I definitely like this a lot more than Blood... but that’s a pretty low bar. This feels like a more pop/boring burials for me. Definitely a disappointment after how much I dug missing man.

Also, this album should NOT have been a summer release. Definitely not fitting the current season.

there's obvious difference but DU literally just sounds like the follow up to STS . it has its own theming and thus its own identity but saying that DU is completely removed from STS and thus something completely different is just silly.

They are similar in that both have elements of post-hardcore, pop-punk, alt rock and electronic. But the execution of that concoction is VERY different across the two albums. DU is noticeably more poppy. I mean, a song like The Missing Frame would stick out like a sore thumb on STS. Davey's vocal style is very different, partly due to the vocal surgery he had. Imo, his screams are considerably worse on DU. Indeed, the post-hardcore elements on DU in general are a massive step down from STS. Kill Caustic feels so thin as a song. Davey's DU lyrics are also much more in keeping with emo cliches that were in vogue at the time, making for some very cringe results (Affliction is ruined as a result). Also, the production on DU is just horrid. Play 37mm, which is otherwise a good song, next to a Blaqk Audio song and you can hear how grainy the track sounds.

I mean, ultimately, whether two things sound similar or different to you depends on what you focus on. To me, the differences between the albums are far more salient in my listening experience than the similarities.

Honestly, if I didn't know the order in which the albums were released, I'd put my bets on Burials being the STS follow up.

Anyway, don't mean to pick fights with fellow fans of post-STS AFI just because we disagree on which albums are good, similar etc =]

don't worry, didn't sense any hostility or whatever! (hope you didn't either!)

I'm just hear for some good AFI discussion and I'm definitely getting that for the most part!

DU is like STS but with a worse Death of Seasons (Affliction), slightly worse singing, and much worse screaming

Affliction > Death of Season

Affliction top 5 AFI, criminally most underappreciated track from this band imo

had my definitive favorite Hunter bass line until this album came out

I do not like Ben’s take at all, but I also REALLY disagree with greys take... I am probably super biased because somehow Death of Seasons was actually my introduction to AFI. Accidentally downloaded it on Limewire and have been a fanboy ever since

Well what can I say, I became a rabid AFI fanboy during the sts era (although I actually got into them through aod and bsits). I was hyped beyond belief for DU, and then it came out and I couldn't help but feel disappointed, mainly because, as I mentioned before, it just felt like a rehashed and less consistent StS. I definitely wasn't the only one on sputnik who felt this way either, but idk, maybe the general feeling on that album has changed over time.

Actually my favorite DU songs are the b sides, ether and fainting spells. if those made it onto the album I would've liked it a whole lot more.

AFI has some great b sides, that are often better than the songs they do choose to put on the albums.

(Nope, no hostility sensed! Just clarifying because tone is easy to misread on the internet!)

Man, I do not get the love for Affliction. I think it's easily one of their worst songs since Jade joined the band.

StS is this very well-balanced mix of dark/gothic punk and alt-rock, while DU delves deeper into the alt-rock side, with far more pop and electronica elements, and also flirting with the catchy post-hardcore sound that was quite popular during the mid-2000's (think early EtF, The Used, etc). DU's production is super polished and if it was used on StS, which was also obviously still a clean sounding album, the songs would lose some of their grit and emotional resonance.

From what I recall, StS already lost some of their fans for going towards a more "commercial" sound, but that album manages to encapsulate their former energy and darkness while hinting at a new direction perfectly. I enjoy DU's glitter and electronic textures, which are also some of the things that appeal to me in their newer records, but those are very noticeable parts of their music that changed after StS.

Like nightbringer said, the differences are far more palpable than the similarities.

"DU delves deeper into the alt-rock side, with far more pop and electronica elements"

Yes, very much agreed. DU is far happier to offer alt rock songs that entirely drop the punk element. Overall, the album carries less energy than STS as a result. The only DU songs I could imagine fitting on STS (if you drastically changed the vocal style, lyrics, and production) would be:

Kill Caustic

Kiss and Control

Affliction

Endlessly, She Said

*Maybe* Miss Murder too.
