I feel like Valerie has pretty much the perfect voice. It has a very steady and consistent quality to it that I think pairs really well with the super dense instrumentals they have. The way it’s almost always layered with Roby’s voice is really nice too and gives a really satisfying, full sound to the vocals. His vocals aren’t mind blowing on their own terms but they work for how well they blend with their music just like Valerie. You don’t need flashy vocals when there’s this much going on. On Surviving a Smile his voice sounds more sharply melodic than usual, almost reminds me of early Animal Collective. Like Sung Tongs era. It works really well imo
