Anyone should be able to review anything they want to, case closed. As long as they don't insert themselves into the black/female/trans (insert race/gender/identity) experience and make statements they have no right to make, it's not an issue. Part of the problem is that a lot of writers do that, even if unwittingly. The other half of the problem is that lots of readers go into these pieces looking to tear them apart for the most miniscule misphrasings, and rather than present them constructively to help the writer grow, they use it as an opportunity to frame the person as (sexist/racist/etc) before they even have a chance to explain, edit, or atone. And that's not to say that people should just be allowed to revise blatant bigotry/misogyny and laugh it off, but there should be a better attitude of giving the benefit of the doubt. If this were the case - which in my opinion it is not currently - then there wouldn't be so much fear of backlash at the slightest mishap. It's one thing to hold writers accountable and to make sure they're not speaking out of turn, but it's another thing to intimidate them into only writing about their own experience and to prevent them from attempting to branch out into other cultures.

‘lower ratings and more scathing opinions’
You see I don’t see too many particularly harsh ratings or opinions for this album and many similar.
A 2.0-3.0 rating or an opinion like ‘this is dull’ or ‘this is derivative’ is incredibly mild criticism, especially when some people have said they’ve rated other albums by the same artist higher. I’m not seeing a flood of 1.0 ratings and ‘I hate this woman’ statements.
It’s this position coming from ‘the critic consensus has said this is a 90% rated album - this now means a 50% is shitting on it’.
I’ve rated a St. Vincent album 3.5 in the past, not entirely my thing but a solid album - this isn’t as good and I think I can give valid reasons why I don’t like it as much. A 2.5 rating seems fine and appropriate :/

not to diminish the quality of discourse on this/last page that i largely agree but don't have time to add to rn but
"BLACK WOMAN REACTS TO YNDI HALDA"
10/10 comment

lovin this discourse
the current state of social media and the increasingly tangible link it has to an individual's R E A L existence is precisely the reason why I don't attach my identity to my reviews. the amount of legwork legitimate reviewers have to put into maintaining a flawless online presence across various media is insane
i do feel that scathing reviews sort of need to operate on a different precedent where feelings need to be considered (don't @ me), but people's cynical kneejerk reaction to a 3/5 these days is pretty nuts

I love how I not only pointed out this is her Boarding House Reach as in it's an amazing album that all you weirdos for some reason hate, but that Fantano also had the exact same reaction LMAO

That’s all well and good with Fantano but I heard this happened to counteract:

Spookily Jack White made the cut for this list with a different album

That list is mostly accurate tbh, but putting either Fiona Apple or The Weakerthans on par with this is deeply fraught

It’s a list where everyone finds two or three entries troubling - never the same ones as the next person though
I’d 100% put this on the same score as last year’s Fapple, both leave me feeling the same - vaguely retro with a twist but overall effect contrived and great songs at a premium (three great songs from each? About that).
If ‘Bolt Cutters’ had been EP length then it might have got a 3.5 by me but after 40 minutes of the same clickety clack percussion and that same deliberate mannered vocal style I’ve gone beyond being over the sound. High endurance factor working against it.
This album is more a grab bag of good, ok and shitty songs - though nearly all the second half being sleepy down tempo does increase the endurance factor.

didn't vibe with the aesthetic of that one
it is quite clicky and clacky you have to admit -heard people raving about it being so, lot of love for the percussion but didn't enjoy it personally
