no, jokes aside. I like my share of Steven Wilson, but I wouldn't rate Porcupine Tree nor his solo work amongst the stuff I truly care that much about to be salty ;)
my gimmick on this site is too be pedantic and salty

"I also can't help but feel that Steven Wilson takes himself a little too seriously these days. A little too much for his own good"
Although the whole Future Bites advertising campaign is mildly funny, this is true. He's becoming a bit jaded as well. I used to love watching interviews with him, but lately he acknowledged his influence on many bands and comes across as slightly arrogant at times IMO.

Nice try, Stevie. I will admit that I really enjoyed "Man of the People". The 90's era-Wilson synthwork builds a fantastic atmosphere on there. "Count of Unease" is quite good, too, but the rest of it is either unengaging, aggravating, or both.

On first listen it's not terrible. Like there's nothing so completely offensive about it that I would pan it and give it a 1 or something. That being said, the quality of songwriting is strangely lacking. Steven has usually been so good at taking a melody and building it to a strong climax (there are a couple of outliers to this but generally speaking he's quite good at it), yet a lot of the songs on the first half feel half-baked. If he had written an album with this soundscape and had written quality songs it really wouldn't be far off from "To the Bone." But the reality is "Unself", "Self", "King Ghost", and "Man of the People" just don't do anything or aren't given enough time to go places.

The album has a really nice flow and sequencing. I don't think there will be much staying power tho

I don't hate it as much as I thought I would, but it still won't make my end of the year list.

Torontonian nice to see you around these parts again!
My favorite is HCE. Everything he's done is excellent though, so I'd say just start at the beginning with Insurgentes and enjoy them all.

This is the first one that I've rated lower than 4. Since hearing this I went back and relistened to his older music and appreciate it even more than I already did.
