I mean, it's purely born of maladjusted white boys in cushy western European society lashing out at pretty much nothing. It's not like Christianity was ever as all encompassing in their lives as it is in say the Americas or the Middle East. Religion and state are separate over there and it's about half and half whether someone in a place like Sweden is religious or not. But the cats in Mayhem used to shoot pellet guns at McDonald's just cause they felt it represented change they didn't want.

lmao Really, black metal is all about mental illness and not being able to properly handle your emotions. Just happens to be some of the best music in the world though.

Happens all the time, that's what rock 'n' roll was originally, back in the early 50s

unrelated comment: anyone who would make black metal (or any music genre) part of their identity is a loser pretty much by definition and virtue that their sense of self worth must be so low that they're desperate enough to craft a sense of identity and belonging around a genre of music. And I feel like it's these ones who extremify any given genre and give it a bad reputation

I think it’s understandable if you're a teenager who's trying to figure themself out, but a grown ass adult basing their identity on a genre of music is extremely lame yah

Well a lot of people tend to identify themselves with the music scenes they spend their time in. I call myself a punk pretty often. lol It's just more pithy tribalism though.

"What does this mean?" I just mean more egalitarian and economically stable societies like Denmark, Germany, Norway, etc. As opposed to eastern Europe like Russia, Hungary, or Serbia.

I can't even tell you the numbers of times I'll tell people I love death/black metal and they're like... bu bu you dress so normally.

lol Of course. I get untold amounts of weird looks or shock when I talk about all my wilder tastes, being black and in a narrow minded place like Mississippi. People love putting others in boxes and projecting expectations on them though. It'll never change.

Im older than 80percent of this site and still wear band shirts and hoods exclusively and sitting hear with my Through Silver in blood sweater on. Guess I got low self esteem.

"craft a sense of identity and belonging around a genre of music. "

Yeah what losers, finding themselves and where they feel acceptance and belonging through the vehicle of music

Yeah, I wouldn't give a shit if I met some metalhead all decked out in metal merch and shit. Would probably think they were pretty cool until they started saying random problematic epithets like plenty of metalheads do lol. Deez, you sound like a cool guy tbh.

I don't think there's a problem with making music a healthy part of your lifestyle. Just parse out the good from the bad.

Band shirts are great! Nothing wrong with outwardly expression your love of music, imo. I was thinking more along the lines of getting really elitist and gatekeep-y about a particular sub-genre because your identity is so tied up in that sub-genre being a certain way

Yeah, all that behavior sucks. Too rigid, with a lot of ego tied up into it. Like I said earlier, art is for everyone. Lots of people in a lot of music scenes don't get that.

"I just mean more egalitarian and economically stable societies like Denmark, Germany, Norway, etc. As opposed to eastern Europe like Russia, Hungary, or Serbia."

None of these societies are egalitarian, far from it, nor are they economically stable. It has been one staged financial crisis after another, neoliberal shock doctrine written all over it, pretty much since the early eighties.

Us maladjusted western European white boys have every reason to be pissed.

I don't even fully disagree but fuck me "neoliberal" is the absolute worst online political buzzword to crop up in 2020
