It's odd that I find myself agreeing with a review's negative criticisms yet disagreeing with the rating/conclusion. I do agree the beats get repetitive, there's a lack of hooks, and the lyrics are terrible; but they're countered by a few factors. One is this is probably the most gorgeously produced album Ari has released, if not the most beautiful anyone's released this year. Two is that Ari's voice blends really well with that production, almost as if it's just another instrument. I think that's where the lack of hooks and "dullness" comes from, but the beauty of the mix makes it mostly a positive. To me, the worst tracks here are those where too much emphasis is given to the beats/vocals and not enough on the aesthetic mix of strings, guitars, synths, and other instruments. Needs more listens for me to settle on a rating, but currently I like this better than her last two, which had more stand-out tracks but much more filler and a lack of any overarching aesthetic/vision. I also personally think Ari is at her best when she's doing R&B pastiches, and it's nice to see her return to more of that here. Part of me still thinks Tattooed Heart from her debut is her best song.

Also, it must be said, that VI to sus2 tonic resolution on the chorus of Positions is just glorious.
