The recording quality is bad, but the production is terrific. Great depth of field and balance, smooth levels and large dynamic range. It's easy to chalk it up as bad production because the guitars are scratchy and the drums are distant but the subtleties here are so well done for an immersive and hypnotic experience.

I guess anyone complaining about bad production has just gotta be new to black metal.
The production is really nice.

I think some people just include recording quality when they say production.

I mean yeah it's all technically part of the production, but after eleven albums it's clearly very intentional and done for a specific effect. So it's lo-fi, distorted, noisy, indistinct, hazy, or a number of other adjectives, but "bad" is kinda missing the point. I've made badly recorded and mixed albums because I had no idea what I was doing, but Wintherr is totally in control here.

i think some people dont actually understand how artistic choice works

Still a valid criticism even if it's the artist's choice. I really like the production here though, and I would even if the results were accidental.

its not like there is an objectively good way to record or mix things lol, its genre dependant at the very least

Sometimes an artist's production choices make the music sound like shit. Definitely not the case here, but I guess it *could* be a valid criticism if it were made properly

"its not like there is an objectively good way to record or mix things lol"
I ain't trying to get sucked into the whole "subjectivity/objectivity" thing, but there is a difference between things like audio fidelity, dynamic range and whether something is enjoyable, which depends infinitely more on the listener.
"Sometimes an artist's production choices make the music sound like shit"
I mean yeah, hence why I often complain about a record being too clean (read: sterile). So does Park actually.

Yeah, like Mansoor-produced albums for example. Fucking lifeless and flat.

I wonder what Effigy would sound like with this thing's production..

recording and production aside, I hate how this sounds through my speakers, definitely something i can only listen through headphones (as is the case with most music I guess lol)

Not sure if it's the case but his self titled sounds like the production could've partially been the result of inexperience whereas this album sounds fully intentional

I'd buy that theory. he was also using all-analog there, while later albums were more "professionally" created with that organic (if serendipitous) sound in mind.

it sounds so good raw

True. Thats probably the biggest difference honestly

My impression has been that most people say "bad" knowing that it can be a choice, but it was never a good word. Clean vs. noisy or sth would be better.
My original point was then that this doesn't strike me as particularly noise if compared to other paysage releases.

On the production, Kerker makes this sound like a Widek album. People just aren't familiar with/used to how Wintherr wants his stuff to sound. I wasn't.
