"Glad they kept the drummer and hope it stays that way." [2]
He was my favorite part of TSATS and, while I dont think his performance is as memorable, he still elevates this record imo.

Anyone remember how the band talked about the songs off TSATS prior to their release and said stuff like "Heart From Your Hate was a tech death song, but we changed it around a million times until we got this"? I feel like this is what TSATS could have been if they didn't work on the songs so much to trim the fat and make the choruses huge all that stuff. This feels a lot more primal and visceral yet not as strong and refined as TSATS. In a way it's two album with very similar style but very different approach by the same artist. This kind of subtext is always interesting to me

True, and that's why none of their albums feel like rehashes of each other to me, despite the later ones obviously borrowing ideas from the earlier ones. They always change up the songwriting approach.

Yea, I feel the same way and it's quite an accomplishment, because they're actually kind of limited because of being a poppy mainstream metal band lol
I think the beginning of The Defiant reminds me of Like Light To The Flies

"I seem to remember the best Shogun song being Into the Mouths of Hell but I'm a fake metal fan so"
Shogun is the best song on Shogun.
Bending the Arc to Fear is the best song here.

Honestly I dug the album a lot, the bass lines and tones are fucking killer and drummer is great. I can see issues, but i liked it. Not all my metal has to be impossible to get into death/black/prog metal, even if i love by impossible to get into death black metal.

I'm kinda sick of metalheads bitching that metal isn't popular anymore while shitting on any metal that approaches the mainstream in any way.

Modern metal isnt mainstream because it has unclean vocals and it's the sign of the devil or something

Catastrophist is a steaming pile of dogshit. It's such an unholy piece of garbage that it holds the record back from being a 3.
