As much as I disagree with Dunkey's views on the gameplay, he's dead on about that story. It's vapid, tasteless, and stupid. It's so stupid it actually convinced this dude that it's deep and smart and has excellent world building lmao

I have a big soft spot for MGS stories. They're basically just as dumb as this story, but bc the characters in MGS are all fucking bonkers, when the stupid stuff happens it's just endearing and funny. When the stupid stuff in DS happens, it's just sad bc all the characters are so serious. Higgs is the only self-aware character in the game which is probably why the stupid shit he says isn't nearly as bad as all the other characters.

Lol yeah I feel like some people want so desperately to ascribe meaning where there isn't any. I almost can't blame them; after 70 or so hours I wanted a deeper story too, but the truth is it just isn't there

Agreed, MGS is very silly and everyone seems to be cognizant of this which makes it a fun ride, but everyone in this game is so dead ass serious all the time that it makes their antics that much more unbearable

ahh yes, the thread where sputnik's least popular users come to pseudo-intellectually one-up each other
i shall remember to steer clear in future

Nobody wanted to love Death Stranding's story more than me. MGS is my favourite game series ever, I literally collect MGS games and own extremely rare and expensive versions of them, I love everything that influenced Death Stranding (Left Hand of Darkness, Stalker, Ghost In the Shell, Evangelion, etc.). I fucking adore the gameplay, I loved every second of my 80 hours trekking across a beautiful map. And the opening of Death Stranding was REALLY strong. The opening cutscenes were intriguing, well-directed, well-paced (at least until Deadman shows up to be boring). I was drawn in. But then every cutscene after that opening was a drag. And it got increasingly worse with each new one. And all the interviews and information logs bored me to tears, and it's not because reading logs is boring, because the only reason I ever completed Control earlier this year was because of how well written and fascinating literally every single document was.
I wanted to love this story, but I can't. I hate it. And if the story wasn't so bad, it would absolutely be my GOTY. But instead I may have to give GOTY to Resi 2, Sekiro, DMC5, Astral Chain, or Iceborne. Still undecided.

We're not even fighting anymore, we've joined forces in order to shit on this dude who thinks Death Stranding is a brilliant and deep story on nihilism and the end of the world
|

That makes the video 10x more accurate

That's the thing too, we're being insulted for not being into world building supposedly meanwhile the logs are so fucking tedious and boring in this game, and not the best way to build a world imo. Some games do this very well tho. I think the RE games sometimes master this, and I know we disagree but I think Witcher 3 does a great job of doing this too, albeit there are many swings and misses.

Also huge yes to Sekiro, Iceborne, RE2 and DMC5 for goty nods. All in my top 10 for sure

"snox vs gyro"
We're agreeing tho wut. It's a rare thing I know, but still. Dude has good opinions on games, ngl (except Witcher 3 but I think we put that aside for the sake of law and order lol)

We don't under-strand this game. Our IQ's are simply not in the big boi region of Death Stranding and Tool fanboys.

I like the minutiae in building and placing structures and getting autistic about achieving S Legend of Legends evaluations in a delivery. The story feels like a half-baked poor man's early Murakami (thinking Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World) but that's probably just a lazy Japanese comparison on my end.

Very expertly crafted review, I liked how you divided it into sections like that.
I wont be able to play the game itself until it gets a PC port (most likely not gonna happen, right?) so putting a score on this is like listening to the soundtrack of a movie I haven't seen, that said I thoroughly enjoyed this.

Cheers man, really kind words

PC has been confirmed since the beginning and double-confirmed weeks before the game's release. You'll get a PC port next year.
