Honestly it's an exhausting first couple of listens. There's _a lot_ going on.

Sometimes it's oh yeah, have me now, at other times it's WHY the FUCK would you DO this??

Three listens in. I think Heritage has still got this beat, but only by a slight margin. "Next of Kin," "Lovelorn....," "Universal Truth," and "Continuum: are my top picks this far, in addition to the singles. I understand the hate for "Charlatan" but I'm really growing to like it. It's a sick groove.

Lol, Mikael is lucky Chris Cornell is dead.

Yes I'm referring to that bit in Universal Truth that copies the pre-chorus of "You Know My Name" literally note for note.

I feel the same Lucman. My favs are the two singles, Lovelorn Crime, Universal Truth, and Continuum.

I like the more adventurous mixing on this thing, though the compression does fuck with the dynamics a tad when transitioning from heavy to soft

I like the fact that they are trying some new stuff and that the songs actually feel like coherent songs for once. However I really feel like I will listen to it about four times think it was fun and not really come back to it. There’s not anything really hooking me in too much here.

I went with Swedish first but the English was just as good to my ears.

I feel comfortable handing this a conservative 4 for now and seeing where it goes from there (most likely up). This is better than PC, Sorceress, and yes, Damnation. Def gonna pick up a physical copy when I get the chance.

I'm going to re-listen to this soon but I think the main problem I have with this ''new era'' of Opeth is the oversinging he does. In their older albums, even on Watershed, Mikael's vocals were like ''Oh this guy needs to get the pain out and express himself and sing'' but on the new stuff he's like a performer, only. An actor playing a role. Not really ''in'' the music, but contriving it. He's even admitted that this is more or less the case.

They can do what they want but it doesn't really work for me. I feel I'm listening to someone showing me how well they can sing instead of listening to something with a real mood and feel to it. I also have this problem with the band Dream Theater.

Yes I too have issues with the singing on the majority of the albums by the band Dream Theater

Heritage is one of their best, only took me 3 years to realize haha

I agree Eons, it kinda ruins parts of the last three albums. Don't know why he feels the need to go over-the-top so much with this new style, it pretty much never happened in the 90s and 00s albums.
