They didn't earn the label so much as people who enjoyed these bands got tired of the debate around whether djent was a genre or not, and gradually started using "progressive metalcore" to label them instead. It's not an incorrect label either, as these bands are indeed a progressive form of metalcore; and whether someone thinks other metalcore bands (such as Dillinger) are more deserving of that label or not is subjective.
