Runnin Toward the Light is a straight banger
This didn't hit me like the first one though

this is more consistent than the first one by a long shot, even if Divorce & The American South is probably still his best work

I wouldn’t even say it’s “more consistent”, they’re both incredibly consistent.

I like this one better than WDHEO, but I think that's because of the context of the rest of his work. I don't think this would be as good if you didn't have the first album/EP for context in Aaron West's story. After an album and EP of a man wallowing in self pity, I love that this album ends on a positive note. Honestly Aaron West puts all of Soupy's work with TWY to shame.

This doesn't beat out No Closer to Heaven or Sister Cities. It rivals them, though. I will concur that this album has some of Soupy's best tracks. Just Sign the Papers, Runnin' Toward the Light, Winter Coats, and Routine Maintenance are some of my favorite this year. I disagree that enjoying this one requires the first album. In media res suffices for me. In fact, I think this work is a lot better than the first one—as in, not close.
My AOTY so far tbh.

I think this does beat NCTH and Sister Cities...but if Soupy ever does anything The Greatest Generation or Suburbia tier, I'd be ecstatic

I really really dislike Winter Coats.

I know I have divisive opinions on the Wonder Years. I can't like Suburbia for the life of me, and I like No Closer to Heaven more than anything else. So take my opinion with a grain of salt or whatever because I like them for different reasons.
The hot take about disliking Winter Coats makes me a little sad. The lyrics are so good! The section about playing the organ was wonderful and goofy.

Why would you dislike Winter Coats? Such a good chorus. What’s not to like about it?

NCTH is my favorite TWY record, but this tops it imo. This is by far Soupy’s best work for me. Just Sign The Papers is a strong SOTY contender

Still a big yawn for me : /
Exceptional lyricism as always tho!

yeah gotta agree, this album is an exceptional emotional journey/storytelling chapter that regrettably is not that good as an album

Yeah I’m shocked that people find the original more interestingly musically (although I love the first one). To me this has a more realized version of the Americana sound and managed to implement a sense of hope without throwing away the character study for a “things get better” message. Absolutely in love with this still.

Nah I think the first one is at least as Americana as this, and has production that this

Ok I guess to amend that, this one’s Americana style lends itself more to the story. I get such strong Bruce Springsteen vibes on this record. WDHEO was like “emo Americana” whereas this one is Americana rock, making the slower moments even more rewarding

So horns = yawn? Seriously, this album has much more variation than the first.
