I'm between a 3 and a 3.5 for this. The singles are by far my favorites. Such a pity that there aren't more songs like Running Styles, that song is a hard 5 for me. A couple others are really good but especially the second half is all meh imo.

Hotel Bar = All I Can Keep Is Now > I'm a Stranger Now > The Running Styles of New York > title track > the rest

at least that's where I'm at right now

Ok yeah, I could easily see myself bumping this to a 4.5. I think it's a perfect balance of something old and something new. Also maybe the best vocal performance he's given, which isn't something I expected to say about a Tallest Man on Earth record.

I guess I'm in the minority here. Oh well. Glad so many people enjoy this!

I totally get where you're coming from though, and it might be beneficial that I'm not as familiar with Dark Bird is Home, which I've only given a couple of cursory listens too. So from my frame of reference, this is a nice progression from his earlier stuff, which I adore.

This is such a wonderful album. It's like a love letter to himself and his own music, finding a new confidence, returning to his roots and honing in on his self identity. It seems to be a super personal album for him and I think that really shows. Th striped down approach, softer vocal qualities, the bedroom production, all super warm and emotional sounding. The Running Styles of New York and All I Can Keep is Now are such a treat. (Love is All is still my favorite ever though)

@Sowing - I'm not saying your missing the point of the album, but I'd go back again through his discog, take note of things you love from the early albums, and see if you find them here. Dark Bird was a very different direction for him, but left me underwhelmed with such a big band approach that didn't really reflect his style and moods. We got great moments from those as well, but it felt kind of forced. This album feels completely the opposite. I hear a great sense of comfort in his voice and songwriting again.

Please review this Atari. A (slightly) negative Sowing review could only pair well with an overwhelmingly positive Atari review.
