"this is better than Train of Thought imo"
I'll have to think on that some. I currently have them both at a 4. I initially didn't like ToT when it first came out. Grew on me over time. I kind of appreciate DT going for an uber-heavy vibe for one solid album, but I think it's been one of their downfalls ever since. Really, DoT is more what I've always really loved about DT, but then I also have to compare it more to the superior early albums while ToT stands on its own to an extent... if that makes any sense.

Decidedly the amount off riffing and excellency matches the amount of cheese

Cheese is good. Never eat a pizza without it.

It's okey, nothing special though

If you're a fan a 4 is really appropriate. This feels a lot more energetic and organic than most their post-ToT stuff

Damn, I fucking love the bonus track. What a groovy monster

"Organic" is a key word here. Really feels like the whole band jammed out and had real input on the project rather than it being dominated by Petrucci or (in the old days) Portnoy. I feel like this is an album that'll repay a lot of listens as you can really appreciate what everyone's doing separately as well as together. Bonus track is indeed fire.

I couldn't even listen Out of Reach a 2nd turn...Pale Blue Dot though m/
Agree that a fan can dig this riffing fest.

I dig Out of Reach a lot tbh, but that's just me. James LaBrie really grew on me a lot

Viper King is so fucking fun, I love it.

why is the mix so weird

Viper King is straight up Deep Purple. Dream Purple... Deep Theater.

I think I'd rank this at 8, comfortably below BC&SL and above S/T.

yeah I kind of overrated this on first listen out of hype.

TA set the bar so low that getting something that was even minimally competent would be exciting on the first listen, maybe even a few after that. It's hardly my favorite, but I will say it's a contender for most consistent DT album. The closest it comes to a "bad" track in my eyes is "Out of Reach," which I still think is above-average as far as DT ballads go.

Yeah, it'll be a while before I revisit this again. I've had more than my share of Dream Theater for a while trying to finish their discog, and frankly, I think that's why James LaBrie finally started to grate on my ears by this point as well as the last album.

Studio-wise, I don't understand the hate for LaBrie. I guess I can understand finding aspects of his voice or vocal style annoying, but I've remained of the belief that his voice suits the music. Now if we're talking live performances, that's a true can of worms in my eyes (and ears).

Yeah, I didn't understand it either until I listened to 4-5+ different albums in a row and his style just started grating on me. Never mind that on tracks like "S2N" he just sounded weird to me.
