Nah Anareta isn't better... And I was on the Anareta side of the "which one is best between Ecdysis and Anareta?" debate. Idol is just so much more fun than Anareta. I don't know, I just get a huge Cynic and Atheist (the beginning of Soothsayer just screams Atheist) vibe on this one, more so than on previous releases. I understand people that would prefer Ecdysis for the slightly more old-school DM feeling. I also get people that would prefer the more solemn and dark atmosphere of Anareta. But Idol is everything I want from a prog/DM album (it's fun, it's surprising, it's awe-inspiring)... and so much more. Fuck it! I'm giving it a 5! Anareta was already my favorite DM album of the decade so far, Idol just took the crown!
Obscura can go screw themselves with all their noodling and boring "prog" parts, Horrendous is where prog DM is at (actually, Obscura get screwed by pretty much every decent tech DM band these days, the band never recovered from the loss of Muezner and Grossmann)!
Good year for tech/prog death in general btw!

A big trepidation for me is that it feels like they’re at a very precarious perch between prog metal and death metal and it would be very easy for them to trip over themselves right into that full on self absorbed prog pit of doom
But im praying for them to stack on course
