Their best album since Tripod (2)

I enjoy this quite a bit, I think the riffs and heavier sludgier moments work better than on their last one. There are less memorable choruses and melodic sections here though. Probably like this one less overall, still really good though.

Not too crazy about this. I especially disagreed with this from the review:
"The band still sounds extremely energetic and passionate." And makes want to sleep.
But AiC=quality, aint no denyin' that.
Also yeah that eye in the triangle. Bet Jerry just read The Illuminatus Trilogy by Wilson and Shaw. It will do that to you.

Since they recruited DuVall, I've been hoping that Jerry would just kind of hand over the lead vocal duties. But his voice is so prominent on pretty much every song on the last 3 albums. He's always sounded great in harmony with Layne/William but on his own, there's just nothing real special there.

He sounds pretty good in harmony with Duvall too.

Yeah I meant he sounds good in harmony with both of them. Just imagine listening to "Don't Follow" if Layne didn't sing on it. You tolerate the Jerry verses because you know the Layne payoff at the end is so worth the struggle. Another reason why "Heaven Beside You" is one of my least favorite AIC songs. So flat compared to the rest of the catalogue.
Another interesting thing is that when they released their box set, Music Bank, there's a remixed version of "What the Hell Have I." Oddly enough, Cantrell's vocals are suddenly mixed louder than Layne's on the verses. My 18 year old self was shaking with rage when I discovered this upon its release.

the part with the bass and reverby guitar around 2 and a half minutes into the title track almost has an 80s goth rock, Cure-esque vibe and that's a pleasant surprise. definitely one of my favorite tracks on the album.

Yeah I had the widest grin when I heard that part. Just something so unexpected from them and nobody really seems to be pointing it out.

Have you listened to his solo stuff?

I like Jerry's vocals a lot
What i don't like about the latest AIC albums is that they abuse the vocal harmonies. It would be better if they didn't sing together every single thing and saved the harmonies for climaxes/choruses etc

This. They totally overdo the layered vocals, takes it down a whole level for me...

Jerry makes that song though.

As a teenager in the 90's, I was a raging Layne addict. Everything the dude touched was magic to me. He gave all their songs this extra edge. If you feel Jerry's vocals are the defining part of Don't Follow, we won't ever see eye to eye on any of this.

how about they're both very talented individuals and they both elevate the song in their own way.
