when i look at rym users all i can think is "man when you're 60 you're gonna wish you hadn't spend hundreds of hours listening to music that you hate just to score some 1/5s on the internet on a site that won't exist anymore by that point"

Agreed. I listen to music not having a clue whether I'll like it or not & that can lead to scores such as this 2.0 right here, but that wasn't my intention, I was just curious/trying to expand my horizons.

Purposefully listening to bad music is a complete waste of time in 99% of situations. The 1% (for me personally) is a new album by an artist I used to like & therefore have a long-standing connection with despite not digging all their newer material. I guess you can file that under 'curiosity' or perhaps nostalgia.

yea completely agreed

its a little too safe to listen exclusively to things you think you'll like

but its fuckin stupid to listen to things you already know for sure that you won't

it's like they say, life's too short for shitty wine but if that's the only thing available, then so be it.

I think the assumptiom that most "super-elite" sputnikkers or RYM-Power-users listen to all teh stuff they rate 0.5 or 1.5 is flat wrong. I think a lot of people listen to one song they don't like or generally dislike the artist(s) for whatever reason and then go ahead and smash a low rating on it,.

Geez, dude, I just liked doing it. I think it's important, listening to bad music makes me appreciate the good music even more, I can't know what I actually like if I don't know what I dislike. And yeah, I do listen to the full albums (or EPs, or whatever), it doesn't matter if they're hours long (though most of the time the bad stuff I listen to isn't long than an hour and 15 minutes), if I just wanted to give bad ratings to show how "elite" I am (being "elite" isn't even a bad thing, but that's another discussion), I probably wouldn't even listen to that terrible stuff and I'd just give it a low rating, no one would know. And hey, sometimes I can even enjoy some of the worst stuff I listen to because I find it funny, it isn't that bad.

Nor could I have ever determined what I perceive to be "bad" music had I not been willing to give it a try at one point or another.

I know enough now to not forget what I believe to be "good" music & I've more than adequate experience with being underwhelmed by artist with whom I have an affinity with as it is.

My objectivity score has slowly been going down because idgaf anymore and I just wanna listen to stuff I know I will enjoy or stuff that is rec'd to me. I rarely give stuff below a 3 now but idc

How one discovers their own [musical] identity varies vastly, I presume.

Also, I don't do ratings, so if I were to stumble upon something I ended up disliking, I don't feel compelled to keep record of it.

My objectivity score used to be like 98% but now it's going down because I'm getting closer and closer to a 2.5 rating average, lmao.

if u find that a genre or artist does nothing for you then it makes no sense to continue listening to that unless you have reason to believe that a particular release does enough to differentiate itself from the things u dont like about it

if i hate korn im not gonna keep listneing to every new korn album unless they do something radically different, it makes no sense to be wasting my time like that

I agree. Just sort of saying when I was first discovering music, I didn't quite know what I liked & hearing a broad range of things crystallized my listening aesthetic.

But now I know what I like & do what I want.

also ive said it a million times ill say it again "objectivity" ratings are gash simply because they promote the notion that your ratings should average out to "average" which is fucking stupid because that implies listening to as much garbage as good stuff and why the fuck would you ever consciously want to do that?
