I can't comment on it sounding distinctly like her, only heard this and golden echo. I will say however that this doesn't sound like the same artist who made that album - and thank god for that

I dunno I just really don't hear a HUGE difference between this and Echo, definitely some differences in tone and length but idk. Gyro what makes this album so much better for you?
|
| |
This is just more straightforward pop imo, which doesn't make it inherently better, but I love the hooks here way more than those on echo. One song on echo in particular stands out as annoying as hell, where she rhymes "gold mine" with "gold mine". Echo had some good songs but overall I think it's kinda boring
|
| |
I assume golden echo is tryhard art pop while this is more direct and streamlined. latter is my thing
|
| |
I don't find Echo artsy at all really, it's just sophisticated 80'sish pop, I liken it to a more adult sounding CRJ honestly. That being said, I can see where yr coming from Gyro, this one is a bit more modern and streamlined

| |
The Golden Echo is just bloated, nothing else wrong with it for me.
|
| |
Also definitely an understandable point

Ready to listen to this for the second time today. First impression was quite good.

TGE suffers a serious case of bloat. Several songs I like but they just keep going. In particular I liked Love In Higher Places and Nobody But You but both could've had a minute cut off. I also get bored before the album finishes whereas here when the last track rolls around I'm thinking damn already? I want more!
Also I do feel TGE is much more complex than Primal Heart. I don't know how to put it in words, but TGE is much more difficult to digest. Primal Heart in contrast feels pretty straightforward and I got it on first listen.
Vows showed her wacky side. TGE her artsy side. Primal Heart her pop side. Just my thoughts.

The fact The Golden Echo is harder to digest doesn't necessarily make it a more 'artistic' effort than any of her other stuff, for me at least. This is the first time Kimbra has had executive producing rights on an album of hers.
I thought Primal Heart started and ended in a very precise manner, I can't think of what more I'd want from the album, other than I hope the followup explores something new.

That wasn't really what I mean (although it kinda came off that way). I'm not saying harder to digest = artsy. I'm just saying the album gives me an artsy vibe (whatever that is) and also happens to be hard to digest.
I am also excited with what she comes up with next. She has gone in a different direction for each album thus far. I love that she never makes the same thing twice.

| |
Yep, def like this more than the previous album. I will admit Top Of The World is quite annoying though. She should have left that track off.
|
| |
It's pretty out-there but it breaks the mold nicely without seeming out of place.
|
| |
Sounds like she wanted to be on the radio really badly with that one
|
| |
Really now, that's the least radio-friendly single off the album.
|
| |
You think so? Sounds like a modern American pop song to me. Even her "flow" sounds copied.
|
| |
Not that it doesn't sound like a pop song, but out of "Everybody Knows", "Top of the World", "Human", "Version of Me" and "Like They Do on the TV" I'd say "Top of the World" is the outlier.

Shoutout to John Congleton as well, that guy has been a producer on SO many albums that I adore
|
| |
Santigold vibe on Top of the World. That makes me happy.
