Songwriting this linear can be really though to pull off but they’ve done an excellent job of it here.

that's because it may be linear, but every track has a clear idea of what it wants to accomplish. None ends in the same place it started, they all got a trayectory, like firing an arrow.
Such good songwriting, goddamn.

I also like that it eases you in with two of the punchiest, hookiest tracks before throwing you for a turn with How You Got Your Limp and Not Abel, then eventually builds to the much freer (but still very deliberate) Look of Love (the best track) and the closer. Excellent sequencing.
What I’m still unsure of is whether this is better than Painted Shut. That one is more punchy and listenable so its songs have a more direct, no-bullshit sort of appeal. Different beasts, I guess.
Now I just need to check out Get Disowned...

After revisiting Painted Shut this week I’m realizing this band is one of the best things to happen to indie in the last 15 years - and I haven’t even heard Get Disowned yet.
