Album Rating: 4.0
The Story is actually pretty overrated relative to the rest of her discog imo, it’s certainly better than a 3 but not too much. The title track from that is of course a classic though.
Brandi ranked imo:
1.Bear Creek (Just an amazing, feel-good experience with so many amazing songs. It’s a bit of an outlier in her discog as, taking after its cover, some of the songs have a somewhat more pastoral/folky feel to them. Sound-wise, it’s one of her more diverse. Recommended songs: “That Wasn’t Me”, “A Promise To Keep”, “Just Kids”, “Save Part of Yourself”)
2. Give Up The Ghost (Pound for pound, probably her best album. It’s slightly more consistent and shorter than Bear Creek, which admittedly is a tiny bit front loaded. Some incredible songs here too. Recommended: “That Year”, “Looking Out”, “Pride and Joy”, “Before It Breaks”)
3. By The Way, I Forgive You (Anyone in this thread knows this is great.)
4. The Firewatcher’s Daughter (A kind of inconsistent album with the best songs at the beginning and end, but I actually think there are more songs on this I’d call amazing than on BTWIFY, even though the low points are weaker. Recommended: “Wherever Is Your Heart”, “Things You Forget”, “The Eye”, “Heroes and Songs”)
5. The Story (Like I said, this has one of her best and most iconic songs in the title track, but otherwise I find it kind of overrated, though it’s still very good. Like some of her early stuff, it succumbs to some kind of boring pop-rock-isms. Recommended: “The Story” (seriously, if you haven’t heard this one check it out immediately), “Again Today”, “My Song”)
6. self-titled (Admittedly I haven’t spent a ton of time with this. It’s her debut and very short. A good listen and characteristicaclly very heartfelt but honestly not many of its songs really stand out. Some people call it their favorite though which is a testament to how great Brandi is. Recommended: “Tragedy”, “Someday”, “Fall Apart”)
Honestly though she really is just such an amazing artist, few others can dig into my emotions quite as easily and deeply.
