Not a hack, but not quite the demigod a lot of his fans make him out to be, either (disclaimer: I've only heard this, the original [only once], and Teens of Denial, the latter of which is the only one of the three I'm actually familiar with).
That being said, the best songs from this and TOD are absolutely incredible. I'd like to think the man has a 5 in him

well to be fair, those fans, myself included have heard most if not all of his material, I remember going back through his catalogue descending order just being more and more amazed thinking "how does he do it?"
I'd recommend you to listen to HTLT or NYM you might just find that 5

I heard everything from before teens of style sounds like shit, so ive been avoiding them. The idea that the albums were recorded through a laptop webcam Mic is a little off putting.

pretty inaccurate, you've actually been missing out on a lot of great stuff, and tbh nothing he ever did had such bad quality except for the first couple records he recorded in his car, and even those showed a lot of potential
also he pretty much dropped the lo-fi aestethic after Monomania, the records I recommended above sound fantastic production wise, How to Leave Town even sounds better than a lot of major label stuff
