Definitely hyped for Rise Radiant, too. I pre-ordered as soon as they announced it, so I'll find some way to wait until Friday.

"Slow Violence" is definitely my favorite of the three singles they've released so far. It's just so... no-nonsense.

If you like ''no-nonsense'' type of prog with Grey on vocals, check out Arcane if you haven't already. It's his side-project band, although they called it quits after releasing a mamoth of an album (Known/Learnt) in 2015.

Slow Violence is just straight to the point, it's sweet.

Arcane are far from that tbh. I love their music, but especially Known Learned is quite a slow burner. Chronicles Of The Waking Dream might be my favorite

I think it was the other way around, actually - Arcane was around before Caligula's Horse, their first album was released in 2007 whereas CH was formed in 2011. Also, I remember Grey saying at a show once that he and Sam Vallen had only intended to release one album under the CH name, but the reception was good so it snowballed and they ended up getting a full band together.

I've yet to check Arcane, anyway. I forget that they exist sometimes, but CH is probably one of my favourite prog metal bands.

Or were, anyway. I wasn't super keen on In Contact and the singles I've heard recently haven't excited me much either.

All of this is true! But at the end C-Horse was Jim's priority so, yea, Arcane became his side band. It's just semantics though.

I think they really stepped it up with In Contact. It's much more dense and developed than Bloom or The Tide, even though these albums were amazing

Oh guys, you're right. Sorry to spread misinformation, I really didn't do my homework! Arcane's Known/Learnt is a slow burner, but that doesn't mean it's not tight as hell. It's got amazing ideas, stunning vocals, substance and a boring as fuck album art, but hey, wygd?

In Contact is the only album I've heard from CH, and is amazing. It's just so addictive and Jim's ability to come up with such great vocal lines is phenomenal. Other than that, I've only listened to In Bloom and RR, both amazingly good albums (although RR still needs to be fully digested).

I do like In Contact, but it's my least favourite CH so far. A lot of my distaste has to do with how it sounds - I miss the dryer, more natural sounding production of their earlier stuff, Bloom in particular - but also I also feel like the songs are just weaker than on their first three albums.

I reckon all the songs are much more same-y than they were on Bloom. Every track on Bloom had a slightly different flavour to it, but even though I've listened to it load I still can't distinguish much between the tracks on IC. It's all a little bit *too* dense for my liking. It doesn't breathe.

So yeah, Bloom is easily my favourite Caligula's Horse.

My only problem is the tone. It sounds modern, okay, but it sounds generic. I was listening to the new album, and parts of a song (can't remember right now which one) could easily be confused with Haken.

Yeah. Jim Grey's vocals and Sam Vallen's soloing were probably distinctive enough for me to enjoy a CH song when I heard one, but they're four albums in now and those things on their own aren't enough to carry an album anymore.

Hoping the new album does something new to help distinguish them from other prog metal bands

Just listened to RR for the first time. Damn, it's amazing. I agree they're not straying from their sound, but they still write very distinctive songs that have their own identity. Love it. Salt is huge
