Day I Die, Carin, and Guilty Party are substantially better than the rest after first 4 listens

Day I Die is actually one of my least fav on the album, sounds like a basic National song to me.. Walk It Back is indeed a grower.

"The sample is superfluous and it's overlong. Everything else is good enough."
I actually agree with the sample. I'd love a version where they just left that piano line alone, their instrumentation is more than solid enough to grant it a little confidence. It drove me a tad crazy when they played it live too on the NPR First Listen. But, I dig everything else about the song so much it doesn't do much to ruin it for me either.

Yeah anything I say about this now should be taken with an extreme grain of salt, likely I will feel totally different a week or a month or a year from now.

Yeah tracks 7-12 are probably the best stretch of the year. But I mean Born to Beg is probably my vote of best of the first half but everything here rules. I’ve heard this album all the way through a dozen or so times, 3 of which are album quality but yeah this very well may be best National, IMO. Guilty Party, Carin at the Liquor Store, Dark Side of the Gym, and Sleep Well Beast are all probably the band’s best songs. I don’t get why this hasn’t caught on more than it has.

I think people are somewhat forgetting the nature of The National as growers. They don't fit well into the current "consume as much as you can and form an opinion FAST" methodology that many internet music fans have.
That is to say, no this hasn't really clicked for me yet but give it time and it probably will. Have some patience.

I'm amazed at how little this really has to do with Trouble Will Find Me - weird, awesome album
The second half is definitely a little less experimental and more in the normal vein that the band resides, but it's all still a bit of a makeover. Can't really form real opinions yet, diving in again.

thanks for telling me the correct way of listening to this boney : )

Getting a lot of 22, A Million, Skeleton Tree/Push The Sky Away, and general newer Sufjan vibes on this. The National are as responsible as anyone for those influences though, so it's cool to see them giving those sounds a try on this.
Radiohead too, of course. But, it does get cranky and rock out a few times which is awesome. They truly are masters of their craft.
