Why would he need to? pitchfork is the single greatest medium for objective opinion the world has ever known. Anyone who writes for pitchfork has found a conduit of impartiality and creative genius that transcends the thoughts of mere mortals.

I'll take that as a compliment because even though I hard disagree with a lot of their opinions, I've always found their writing to be quite good.

Their Jet album review was quite a lesson in writing.

pitchforks alright but i know what z's getting at they tend to be a bit overly emphatic with their praise and it can come off as pretension for attention

I think the conclusion sums up this album perfectly, they do seem to just throw things at the board and hoping something sticks without really a general direction or purpose.

lol i kind of agree with the "no identity" thing, though i think the idea that a group or artist needs to be concise with their material for it to be enjoyable is not necessarily true (though as a rule of thumb is i suppose)

like i didnt listen to this expecting some sort of profound hashtag woke message or a floyd esque flowing concept album

why can't something ever just be? nothing more or less? why does it have to be a part of some grander scheme or a sign of something else?

Art is supposed to be engaging on some level, there has to be at least a minimal purpose or direction for a piece, whether it's art, music or literature. No one wants to read the novel of the guy who wakes up, goes to work, goes home and repeats the process, there has to be some level of engagement and prose. For music I would say that's perusing a melody, or lyrical content, or progression of sound, etc.

an album can be made up of individual songs with good melodies that don't necessarily come together as a concise one-message / purpose package like a novel though

i agree the whole album will most times not be as pleasant to listen to ftb but thats not always case for me, take an album like bee thousand for example, that album is far from unidirectional but its still a indie rock classic imo
