obviously 128 is enough to let you determine their songwriting skills. its still not going to sound as good as a higher quality audio file. theres more clutter with lower bitrate audio. drums especially suffer from low bitrate.

sach im stating the obvious here but some (id argue the vast majority of) albums are supposed to be experienced with high fidelity files/speakers. It's almost insulting to the artist to suggest that 128 is sufficient when you're dealing with a dynamic nuanced soundscape (possibly like this idk i haven't listened to it)

I would never listen to metal at 128 kbps, that's just begging for some kind of hearing damage

Great review, this is one of my most anticipated metal albums this year. I generally try to avoid anything under 192, but prefer 320.

Bitrate may not matter to you personally but it definitely makes a difference in how it sounds. Past a certain point it gets far less relevant but 128 vs 320 is a significant jump.

Evaluate, sure, but it's a lot more enjoyable at a better quality. I can wait for my record to ship lol.

What's a VBR type audio? Usually coupled with around 228kbps

VBR is variable bitrate, which basically encodes frequencies for the best trade off in terms of sound quality vs. disk space. CBR just cuts the frequencies off at a certain point (320 is ~20khz, 128 is ~15-16khz).

V0 is the VBR equivalent of 320 CBR, except the files are about ~15% smaller but with the same quality. It's pretty clever so idk why it isn't used more often.

How much music are you trying to encode on a regular basis for that to actually be an issue?

VBR V0 is pretty awesome, but in a lot of cases you can tell the difference between V0 and 320, so in the end I think it's better that the latter is much more widespread.

a lot of supposed V0 rips are shitty transcodes tho, gotta watch out for them

That goes for a bunch of 320 too, mainly stuff that leaks early or right around release date. I do the frequency test in Audacity when I'm not certain.

ramon.

i can't afford to tell the difference between 128 and 420 but i won't let that stop me from throwing a premature 4.5 and calling it a day
