On the subject of damn good songs. I've listened to her new album once and thought it was good, except for "Almeda", which is fucking incredible and which I have listened to maybe 20 times since. I should dig into the rest of the album, but goddamn that's one hell of a song.

"is that because solange writes more intelligent music?"
Afaik Solange has written plenty of music for Beyonce. I like Beyonce too, but more on a song-by-song basis. So... no?

Hearing Losing You on the way to work today - first time I’ve even heard of this artist. R&B is my least listened to, least enjoyed genre. But something about that song made me jump in and so chose this one first as it had the highest average and quite surprised myself by finding it to be a great album. Love the structure and the sounds. All comes together really well as a cohesive whole. Has quite a hip hop feel to it in the way it plays out and reminded me a bit of Miseducation of Lauren Hill with all the interludes. Definitely has replay value and will play it again for sure.

R&B is never going to light my fire but had this on while working on reports and was very pleasant. I didn’t turn it off or skip tracks which is a rarity for me with this style of music. Found it very relaxing. Admittedly these is little excitement here but for me it was a very solid listen.

Maybe 3.5 is more accurate but currently in shock that I listened to an R&B album all the way through, so being generous at this stage.

Tried Voodoo by D’Angelo and Kaleidoscope Dream by Miguel. Definitely not my cup of tea at all. But when The ArchAndroid by Janelle Monae came on - wow, what a musical journey. Loved it. It’s still playing now as I type, and as soon as it’s finished I’m hitting play again.

Glad you dug Janelle - she a queen - and for D'Angelo and Miguel, well, super nice of you to have tried! I also had some struggle at first them as I wasn't too versed on R&B, but hey maybe with time you'll like it!

the nature of the ArchAndroid's appeal interests me. very "accessible" to a certain (large) sector of people with genre-relevant taste caveats
