It's basically a difference between the quietest and loudest sound of an instrument. A common practice in the last 20 years is to achieve a louder sound (due to a widespread false notion of 'louder is better'; see Loudness War) by compressing this range, thus making the levels between instruments less distinctive and in many cases leading to phenomena called distortion and clipping; drums are the most affected by this. A bunch of CD's are in the DR4-DR6 range nowadays, especially in the metal genre, so the DR12 value presented here is welcome.

It's just the difference between the loudest sound you hear and the softest sound you hear. In older albums it's generally bigger and is this more sonically interesting. In newer albums it's generally smaller and so everything's just kind of loud all the time

Upon repeated listens, i'm more intrigued by what shadows is doing than annoyed. Cos he pissed me off so much on my first listen lol

Ah yeah cos the wave files of most newer tracks are just blocky walls of noise instead of varying... OK I kinda get that now...

Do you reckon it's the band or the producers that are to credit for that...

It depends. Some producers like it that way (Rick Rubin and Californication), others do it cuz the band/label asks for it.

Based on the review I would probably have liked this in 2003. At some point I'll give this a listen for old times sake.

Listened to a couple songs. Some cool guitar leads but the vocals are more unlistenable than ever. Overall sounds like it could have been a follow up to COE.

surprised to come in here and see people already talking about the dr on this; i had no fucking idea a metal record would sound this good in 2016.

e; bass is too low in the mix for my liking but that doesn't make me any less pleased with the master

Like if HTTK put you off but you still had hope for the band, this is definitely worth a go.
