What do the critics know?

They'd landed in that 7/10 review bracket for a few albums that just didn't inspire me to put them top of the list to investigate. Plus I knew they had a huge discog and that can also be daunting. So I'd left 'em for a rainy day - my fatal error.
Critics are useful for just pointing you in the way of something potentially interesting - good or bad. When they give a small review and lump a 6-7 out of 10 on it that's the stuff you'll skim over unfortunately. I wouldn't say I trust professional critics in general but without them I wouldn't have found a lot of music so the worst thing anyone can throw at them imo is that they're a necessary evil.

"one of those awful alt-country bands."
Alt-country is honestly one of the most consistent genres out there. I guess we can agree to disagree.
Zak sometimes the critics get it right and these guys are one of those times.

Doof admittedly the albums in the 7/10 bracket are mostly the ones I've still yet to hear so I can't really vouch for those, but I can see why you wouldn't bother with them at that stage.

I'm seeing these guys this week; needless to say I'm stoked. Their live show is supposed to be awesome.

Report back bud, intrigued to know just how much they rock in a live setting.
Guess they might be hitting London?

March 3rd Roundhouse...not my favourite venue but it is a Friday. Hmmmm.

Will do Doof.
I'm a bit disappointed because they just announced a bunch of sets later in their tour with Hiss Golden Messenger as the opener, they've got some Kyle Craft cat lined up for this week, never heard of the guy but hopefully he's good too.

what kind of age group do they pull in?

Hiss Golden Messenger is a pretty good support act.
I don't think I'll be going to the Roundhouse show, just not a venue I can see the missus warming too, all standing and kinda a sweat pit. None of my buddies would go to it, not quite conventionally rock enough, they're more QOTSA/Foo Fighters jokers unfortunately. Could go on my own but it's a Friday night...
Shame they couldn't pack out Shepherd's Bush or Brixton, I'd have been there.

Full they probably pull primarily a 30+ average crowd, hell maybe even 40+
I'm going with my dad and together we're probably still below the average age. XD I'll see though.

I could see a lot of 20s too though, rowdied up by the politics.

It's possible, however I don't think this album really did well enough to pull them too many new fans overall, plus they've been around for over 2 decades now so by definition they have a lot of older fans. Plus alt-country tends to be a genre for dinosaurs anyways.

Fear the mighty Doofus rex!
Of course at heart I myself am as old as any other boney fossil.

Boney what if it's gonna be backwards for you. When you're older instead of listening to this type of stuff you do a complete 180 and pop punk-metal everything

"I could see a lot of 20s too though, rowdied up by the politics."
Well they do share the same infantile mindset so maybe.
