"4.9 for new Banks
4.1 for new Opeth
5.0 for new Yellowcard?"

first one is an acad review so who cares about the rating
second one is a talons review so there is a ridiculous opeth bias
third one is a sowing review so you should be expecting great writing for incredibly shitty music

i guess my point is, don't take sputnik staff ratings too seriously. except for xeno's, that dude has it on point

‘What Appears’ features a plethora of creative and high-energy drum fills – something that’s been sorely missing since the departure of Longineu W. Parsons III, as well as one of the most infectious choruses the band has ever written, an emotional and resolute “I’m still out here looking for answers / I’ve ended up wrong, the faster I’ve gone / but I know I am finding the answer…I am not what appears / I am failures and fears / But I am on my way.”

what appears is kinda dookie man. have u checked out dance gavin dance

This is the first Yellowcard record I've listened to and I gotta say I was very impressed. I need to let it set in a little more before I give it a rating but I'm thinking 4 or 4.5/5. I love all the tracks except Leave A Light On and The Hurt Is Gone which are still good but just a little boring and feel like they're a lot longer than they need to be.

If I had to pick favorites, they would be Got Yours, I'm A Wrecking Ball, Rest In Peace, and Feilds & Fences. But I still love them all.

EDIT: All the tracks I mentioned weren't as good have grown on me a lot. Still probably gonna go with a 4 out of 5 though.

i guess that is not a huge surprise knowing what this album prob feels like to you... i mean that song is soooo yellowcard haha

if yellowcard was limp bizkit, and "I am not what appears / I am failures and fears" was something like "I'm the mic pirate / captain hook the flow up / kick your ass, peter pan / time to fuckin grow up" i would conjure up some nice things to say about drum fills too

so after my first listen, what appears has possibly the corniest lyrics I've ever heard.
Got Yours and Savior's robes stuck out as the best songs (probably because it throws back to lights and sounds era...) Leave a light on was a lovely surprise too.

--Do labels search out reviewers they know will most likely give positive reviews? Cause most advanced copies seem to be received well. Also awesome review sowing--

I can only tell you the way we do it... all promos go through me, and I list them for any interested staff. That's why most our staff reviews are positive -- because they get to decide what to review and what to skip.

Personally, if I get an advance and don't like it, as a courtesy I'll hold it til after the release date before posting anything (if I can be bothered at all).

Same here. Feels a bit wrong to accept a free promo and then tear the album to pieces. Gotta be true to yourself, but waiting until after the main promotional period has passed is a nice little courtesy.

I've always had a real soft spot for Yellowcard, despite never really liking pop punk, no clue why. Ocean Avenue and Southern Air are up there as some of my favorite albums. I don't think this is quite as good as those two, but I really could not have asked for a better sendoff....especially after being so worried from Lift a Sail.

Great review, really got me in the feels!

And yeah hadriel I totally agree this is the best way they could have gone out. I'm not sure how I'd rank OA, SA, and this I just know they're all in the same ballpark.
