I have seen far more bad than good but I am rarely on this anymore to notice the good.

Wilhelm, I think your first issue was that you gave this album a 5.

It is a 5 to me and you are proving my point.

Well, Wilhelm,
I hear yah. Unfortunately, I registered with this is dooshy nickname of "Kupasexy" years ago, so anything serious or meaningful I say is undermined by that and the fact I really do have a fairly crap taste in music. But I know it's crap, and I appreciate the "good stuff" when I hear it.

You are a nice person; among the few on this site.

I think you're under the assumption that music exists within a vacuum. Like some sort of dead space between the speaker and your ear drum. Music doesn't exist this way, you have to take into account the cultural climate in which an album is released. I think Eli is trying to say that Deftones keep releasing the same damn album and everyone is clamoring over it like it's amazing even though they've been releasing the same damn thing for almost 20 years. I think the review is shit but his sentiment isn't wrong.

Thanks.
DaveyBoy and Sowing Season, as staff, are approachable, have an eclectic taste in music, are great reviewers but not in a state of self-colonoscopy sort of way with it or others. They genuinely like what they like and aren't dicks about it if you disagree. The only peer review that matters to me is the compliments I've gotten from them. So there are worthwhile users, big and small, on here. It's just sometimes hard to find them.

Cameron,
That could be true. At least it seems plausible to me. I'm not a hardcore Deftones fan. I like them, but I'm not nearly at all that intimate with their entire discography to be able to detect slight changes in style over the 20 years of their career to be able to determine whether Chino and company have grown or stagnated, and if so, how. Based on the viewpoint of the occasional, casual listener, I can see why both you and Eli would express that sentiment.

Deftones doesn't release the same album over time. I try not to be snarky but it is hard not to be on this site at times.

There were probably better ways for him to express it, but the resulting shitshow makes me think he did it that way on purpose.

Toad,
I don't disagree. It could be I've just had a run of bad luck.

Toad, I understand where you are coming from. I am just hardly on the site, and when I am, I typically post reviews of less popular albums. I am grateful to get 5 comments on my reviews when a staff review is over 100+ at least within the first day if it is controversial. I really do not try to stray too much from the crowd with my ratings, but I am pretty lenient on my ratings for albums. Most of my reviews are 5 stars; I really do not enjoy bashing an album or calling it inferior. I guess that is why I am against everything Eli posted for this review. I felt like he could actually give detail as to why it is a 1.5/5 and not just say it is stale when it is not. That being said, I would still hate the review because I personally do not view this album as a 1.5. I really see it as a 5/5, but I am a hardcore Deftones fan. I fall asleep to a Deftones album at least once every week along with Cocteau Twins, The Cure, David Bowie, and Joy Division. I would rather be sincere than a fucking trolling asshole who doesn't have a life.

could i just say this thread is giving me loads of entertainment

Well, sixdegrees here, case and point: it's unprovoked and trolling/antagonistic for no reason.
Do I think this is everybody, of course not. But is there an issue of lack of civility and constructive, criticism relative to a review, comment, news item, etc.? I think so.

This isn't as annoying as the Joy Division review by Electric City or his Gun's N' Roses review. Those are contrarian reviews, but they should not be the first reviews you see for those albums. I was so pissed when I saw them because I thought it was hipster garbage.

I am 3/4 of the time angry viewing this site. I don't find entertainment reading these reviews. I find them to be pathetic.

@sixdegrees I have, I am not a frequent viewer of this site. I will write a review here and there at times.
|

people don't generally write negative reviews just to "be controversial" lmao, people just say that shit because they're not openminded enough to think that someone else's differing opinion could be sincere
