Yeah, nowhere near as energetic as Incantation, imo.

Well you have to be at least technically decent so rip off Gorguts with any kind of success so they are at least halfway capable songwriters.

Imo DSO worship is far far more prevalent. Everyone is cashing in on that sweet discordant sound. They sound as cheap as the 8 trillion black metal bands that rode the Dissection wave in the late 90s

Are we really hating on metal bands for being derivative? You get like one or two truly unique metal records per year, at most; out of the thousands released.

Crying about a lack of innovation is an inherently metal thing to do

I'm not hating, the Deathmilich Omeguts scene is pretty much the only place you stand a reasonable chance or hearing something new in DM atm

There is some serious good DSO BM out there.

Plus the gorguts style of technical death metal is a million times better than the soulless guitar masturbation of bands like Archspire.

I'm not saying there aren't. Plenty of good discordant BM bands out there but also a lot of cheap copies running seriously dry on inspiration

Yeah I mean bands like Skaphe should foad but generally speaking the ratio of good to bad artists in the DsO/Guts rip off crowd is a million times better than the Autopsy/Entombed/Incantation impersonators.

Come on now, the old school retro death has Funebrarum dead congregation and cruciamentum.

Most BM nowadays is generic as hell, its usually really stale and bland.

And the clean pristine production never helps as well.

Well Ulcerate doing it isn't really the same thing since they are partially (maybe) the same band and they started using 'the sound' concurrently in the mid 00s

"Also i'll never get the unretained circle-jerk for Funebrarum and Dead Congregation here like they're the second coming of christ. I mean they're great bands but Funebrarum has been going downhill since the debut and Dead Congregation are fun but it's not like they're the best or something."

Funebrarum's 'The Sleep of Morbid Dreams' was a hallmark of the 09 revival when a lot of OSDM bands were crawling out of the woodwork. They're a definite 'sputnik' band that a lot of people have fond memories of. They're not the second coming of Christ but they released important albums at the right time.

"Vetimus use quotation marks when you're quoting someone else, it makes your comment such a chore to read when you don't."

As if they weren't already. Just kidding Vet, you've made some good points today.

Im more partial to the "if you do it good, then its good" way of thinking. Even if the cow is milked a bit, there still is capacity for good ideas to be generated from the influence of other projects. To me there's a difference between being "inspired by" or just a straight cop out

I mean you're not wrong. I only listen to Thulcandra because Jon Nodtveidt is dead and Dissection ain't makin no mo music. I would just like to see more bands BEING a Deathspell Omega and forging their own path instead of just ripping on a good idea.

"The Sleep of Morbid Dreams was such a lacklustre step down after the cool almost experimental sounds you hear on Columns. I don't get why everyone loves it more when they just made their sound more straightforward and less unique and super basic"

Unique super-basic OSDM was all the rage at the time. It was a rejection of the crappy tech death and deathcore that was coming out at the time. Being rootsy and simplistic was cool. I don't really agree that The Sleep of Morbid Dreams is lackluster though.
