Gonna have to disagree there Hawks, I think the songs are pretty distinguishable. Plenty of great guitar parts. The added heaviness from the production makes it all the better.
Planetary Duality is also an awesome album. But if it's not your thing, it's not your thing.

Planetary Duality was my thing back in the day but nothing besides Xenochrist endured for me.

Maybe it's just me, but all this modern tech death sounds like the exact same album over and over and over again.

If the genre isn't for you why do you keep listening to it? You don't see me listening to atmospheric black metal or grind core expecting to like it all of a sudden.

"If you don't that's cool but we don't need 8 pages of you saying "tech death is shit" over and over again."
I see your point but we're only on page 6 so far.
Why don't you like grind? Grind is so much fun

All the ones I've heard are pretty entertaining. Greatness Design, Anomalous, Faceless, etc.
First Fragment is another great tech band releasing an album this year.

Check out Deviant Process if you haven't yet. My favorite tech album so far this year. Martyr-esque in a lot of parts.

Lol I don't say it over and over again first of all. And pretty sure if I wanna listen to something I'm gonna do it, sorry to burst your bubble there. I didn't listen to this album looking for the same thing I like about other kinds of dm, I just wanted to give it a shot.
I also don't care if you think half the albums I dig are "trash" because I don't listen to music to please people on Sputnik.

I used to listen to a fair amount of Tech back in the day (Spawn of Possession, Psycroptic, Necrophagist, Augury, Decrepit Birth) but it really wore off me.
Like you, Planetary Duality was one of my favorite albums. I stayed up to watch the countdown on their Myspace because I was so hooked on the singles. I preferred the original version of The Ancient Covenant without the space vocals. I just don't think it aged well.
I don't get a lot of feeling from the genre as a whole. At times it feels like the 'technical' has overwhelmed the music and replaced the emotive aspects of death metal. What you're left with is something that is technically sound and well executed with death metal vocals and stylings hastily tacked on top. It just feels pointless to me. The aggression just seems so forced.

decrepit birth, necrophagist, and spawn are actual good bands though unlike everything else mentioned in here
planetary duality is an okay to great album with really low lows. very flawed. all of their other stuff has been awful
