"Ed I see how the term 'producer' can be a lot more broad than just the technical mixing and audio manipulation you'd traditionally think of. It's the 'big picture' stuff too - collaborator selection (this is key here), the arrangements, the overall 'feel' of the work, etc.

It's important for sure, but I still find it strange to be held up as the main draw for an artist such as this who is effectively operating in the realm of mainstream popular song. His production has at times been on or near the vanguard but not to a revolutionary degree. Yes it's improved some of his more mediocre songs and made an album like 'Yeezus' stand apart as pretty unique but...within this sort of genre it doesn't make for classic albums to my mind. You need something stronger in terms of pure songwriting and lyrical content."

Yeah, alright I can sorta get behind that.

Ed I should have made it clearer in the review my target in general was the more mainstream artists

CAFSF - The National are the most consistent band operating right now, the question was masterpieces of 'this decade'. I'm sure for the 00's some people here would name two or three Radiohead albums as masterpieces, or two or three Beatles albums for the 60's or whatever.

Yeah man, I didn't mean to be too critical, it's hard to be very nuanced in a review, especially when it's kind of a side-bar to the actual review.

The paragraph just kinda reads like the moaning of a guy who "doesn't get what the kids are listening to these days", and since you don't fit that descriptor (*cough* unlike zak *cough*) it kinda rubbed me the wrong way.

Well actually there is a bit of old man grump in there I guess, it's maybe not 'not getting it' but more just not agreeing with that perspective for the most part - I'd enjoy listening to the raw demos to '36 Chambers' ahead of this finished album - as I said above I'm less bothered with how great something sounds compared to how great it just is. It's a fine distinction sometimes but it's there and it's fundamental.

Plus Zak does get it all - most of the time he's just taking the piss the old crank.

Within a genre I like if someone said 'that's the best produced album of the year' I'd be intrigued but would have no idea of its inherent quality. I could agree and still not like the album overall. If someone said an album within the same genre had the greatest song writing that year then as long as I agree with them then it's likely to be a classic album

Lol some of the tracks on here are laughably bad compared to his entire body of work. I do really enjoy 30 hours and No More Parties in LA, but Jesus some of the lyrics on here make me cringe.

it's besides the point... There's no "number of people I don't like/think are stupid offended" scale for art.

I've seen the video, it's shit... It's shallow and pretentious and thinks it's 3deep5u and it makes everyone flip their shit praising it or condemning it and all for the wrong reasons.

That's K's thing right there.
