Only song I didn't like here was The Emperor. Other than that, great album.

Are we talking about the same review, Piroga? The review I'm talking about gave it a D and titled the review "Politics spoils the metal mastery of Megadeth’s Dystopia." Considering how much he praised it musically, if he wanted to knock it down a peg for his personal issues with the lyrics (and for what it's worth, I don't agree with Dave's political beliefs either, nor do I think he's a great lyricist these days, and I noticed the connotations of the opening seconds of The Threat is Real as well), a B- or maybe even a C would have made more sense. Instead, he praises the music itself, then gives it a D for having xenophobic lyrics.

Just read the review in question; it's absolutely atrocious music journalism, to put it lightly. I absolutely despise Mustaine's politics, but the political connotations of this record have absolutely nothing to do with my qualms regarding it. That would be like if someone dismissed the entire punk rock genre due to its lyrical themes predominantly lying left of center.

Eh...found this album to be pretty bland. Nothing terrible, but nothing groundbreaking. And yeah, AV Club's review was awful. They barely said anything about the actual music. Just found an excuse to whine about Mustaine being a conservative. I may disagree with Dave's politics, but I read music reviews for music reviews. AV Club didn't give me a music review.

honestly, the lyrics probably aren't intended to be all about "dirty immigrants are turrists and fuckin up murica"

i mean one could read into them that way if you want, but you could also just look at it as generic "corruption sucks" or "let's talk about war things" if you want as well

i mean seriously, the av club review mentions the threat is real, death from within, and post-american world

okay but then i can look at the threat is real as being about incompetence in government and whatnot, death from within being about a trojan horse (because metal songs are very fucking frequently about historical things, especially war-based historical things), and post-american world seems like it's trying to make fun of chickenhawks with that chorus that he had an issue with, especially when you consider that the verses are about how racist society in general is

i mean it's fucking thrash metal, if you're reading beyond the surface in lyrics about war or evil illuminati or what have you, ten chances to one you'll be wasting your time, and given megadeth's history, i would argue that the lyrics are there just to be thrash lyrics, because that's all most thrash lyrics are

one of the commenters on the review pointed out that, if you take the threat is real as "foreigners are evil", you could just as easily take it as "blowback is a bitch"

and that's really the point, fuck judging an album just because you disagree with whatever message you personally happen to take away from it, if you don't interpret the threat is real as being racist, then you'll see death from within as just about the trojan horse from history, and post-american world as vilifying of the states. the variation in how someone can interpret meaning like that makes it completely pointless. want to write an opinion piece on why bigotry is wrong, more power to you, but keep it separate from the review of an album that you think might be racist, especially when there's a significant number of people who see different meaning in the lyrics

its just that Mega Dave is making all these statements which makes it easy for someone to over-scandalize anything that sounds like politics or religion from his band.

Yeah, I know he's personally a bit of a loon. I just haven't really found it gets carried over into his music, generally, beyond things like not playing Good Mourning/Black Friday at concerts. He wouldn't be stupid enough to intentionally write a song, and by extension theme an album, around "foreigners are evil". I mean, for fuck's sake, Megadeth is fucking adored in South America. Why would he turn around and say, "Buenos Aires, remember that time we put out a live DVD for a concert we held here because you love us so much, and we love playing for you? Yeah, here's a new song about how non-Americans are ruining the world and immigration is awful!"

And again, the whole argument really does fall apart if you interpret The Threat Is Real in any other way than the article describes. If you take it as, like I said, pointing out the risk of blowback from foreign intervention, or just a generic thing about an incompetent or corrupt government fucking up society, then you're not really going out of your way to look for racism in the later tracks.

There really are a lot of good counter-arguments in the comment section on the AV Club review. Like, do we give Sex Pistols a D for insulting the Queen? Do we go back and give out a fuckload of D ratings for rap albums that are homophobic or misogynistic or whatever? No, that would be fucking stupid.

Honestly, who listens to Megadeth for the lyrics? He could be saying gibberish and I wouldn't give a shit because it's about the instrumentals. I enjoyed Dave's voice in his youth and his lyrics were pretty solid but the older he gets and the more worn his voice becomes, the more I just tune him out and focus on the rest of the band.

That's the other point. If you go into a Megadeth album for the meaning, you're doing pretty much everything really wrong. Go try it again.

Subtlety has never really been an aspect of Megadeth, at least not in the lyrical component. If Dave wanted the world to see him as racist, or see his music as racist, it would be undeniably, indefensibly racist.

at this age he should keep it low, I like his vocals when he sings deeper. it's when he starts to snarl it gets annoying. Its too nasal now.

I haven't listened to the album yet and I haven't - and don't intend on doing it - read 6 pages of comments. What I want to say is that, Dave Mustaine may be a total prick sometimes, but he sure is one of the few people who can get their feet back on the ground. I don't care if he uses religion or books for self empowerment, he surely knows what to do so that he won't get stuck in the mud of self hatred.

Also, it's funny that he continues talking about a Dystopian America, but he sees threat in liberals rather than conservatives. Both suck major time, but dude's most probably going to vote me...
