Holy shit I remember when this was the new Korn album
Fuckkk

They tried to make this all dark and raw and it feels forced imo, from the strained gruff vocals to the horror-like artwork. The drum sound is way too clean and soft too for this sound to work. Still, I think it's a decent album. Cool that they dug up Alive to give it a proper recording

Break Some Off goes hard tho

It does. Everything I've Known, Did My Time, Alive, Counting on Me, Right Now... a lot of bangers

I don’t get the lukewarm reception to this album. It’s really consistent and has some of the band’s best hooks

Yeah, same. When I was listening to this band in middle school I always thought that if I wanted to listen to (imo) the best Korn, I couldn't go wrong choosing between Issues, Untouchables, and this.

I have to imagine the reception of this initially was just Korn fatigue. This is definitely one of my favorite off theirs but it's also my first real exposure to them outside their hits.

One of my biggest issues (heh) with them is they have maybe 3 good albums worth of songs in their first 6 albums.

The reception of Take a look in the Mirror was lukewarm because it was released less than 2 years after Untouchables. It was very early, it was clearly in order to make money and make up for the poor sales of Untouchables (their most expensive album as well).
So, people expected a rushed and shallow album. Short brutal songs, the contrary of Untouchables. Everything accessible and straight-forward.
I'm still convinced that the mirror and the title are an insult to the "fans".

Issues was hot on the tail of FTL, doubt that has much to do with it
