this album is really weird for me, some listens i think it rules hard, some listens i think it verges close to deflorate stagnation. kinda waffling between a 4 and 3.5 now

Could've sworn everyone else who was in the band at that point were actually bitching about John being lazy and not writing any fresh material, and that Trevor had to actually write some of the solos and riffs himself, hence Ryan coming in
True, doesn't change the fact that Ryans guitarplay is super dull tho

meaty slams? you're looking in the wrong place
and the sad part for me is there really isn't a stand out solo,
maybe for Asylum or The Fog but not really

Nice review Hawks. Enjoying this album a lot - I got a bit tired of their sound between Defoliate and Ritual but I'm enjoying it again. Not sure yet where to rate it or where to place it within their discography, but as far as a band that's put out album after album between 3.5-4 these guys are as consistent as it comes.
So far I'm enjoying this one more than Deflorate and Miasma, and definitely not as much as Nocturnal or Unhallowed. It's right there in the mix with Everblack and Ritual.
Ryan certainly isn't up to par as a soloist. I always get the sense that he's trying his hardest to avoid falling into Kempainen's beaten-to-death harmonic minor triplet obsession but the riffs don't give him a ton else to work with harmonically and he fails to produce any lasting melodic ideas. Jon was always a subpar soloist too, apart from a couple of moments on Nocturnal, but this guy really could be replaced by almost anyone from a melodic lead construction point of view. But honestly, the leads are such a small aspect of the music for these guys that really doesn't detract much for me, aside from sometimes causing me to wonder why they were included at all.
One of the things that's always bugged me post-Unhallowed is that Trevor has really underused his lows, and from Deflorate on they always sound a bit strained. I guess he struggles with them technically.

First listen: Love the strings in Receipt and That Cannot Die... Highs with Asylum and Vlad. Didn't see much improvement or new ideas over the last records, not a bad thing, because this band is consistent as hell imo. Stygiophobic is probably the weakest track. It's a 3.5-4 for me, as most of their discography

Listen to Stygiophobic in the dark and slit your wrists.

Solos in this are more fun, but not as many fist-pumping moments.
