Well, it's not metal. It's pretty much just his interpretation of I think Syrian/Egyptian folk stuff.
Still awesome, though.

I quite liked in their darkened shrines, AOTW was pretty solid too just haven't gotten around to checking out anything else by them
|

Those Whom wasn't terrible and this is solid as well but as others have pointed out, their albums are very samey. From the top of my head I couldn't give you much of a preference except for AOTW but that my be some nostalgia connected to hangin' out with a lot of whacko metalheads which was fun as hell.

yeah I originally got the impression that Nile stuck to the same formula pretty much. so what I've heard has been great, I've just been more interested in checking other stuff. maybe I'll have to re-visit ITDS or try a new 1.

Yeah agreed Ford.

They definitely do. Not necessarily a bad thing (see Bolt Thrower and bands of the like) but in this case the albums sometimes feel hard to tell apart.

Check out the debut and Black Seeds, way better than Ithyphallic and Sethu.

basically people like shrines and aotw a lot. ppl complain that ithyphallic isn't aotw again. they rly like those whom the gods detest a lot randomly. sethu gets bagged because thin production (but the riffs are killer imo). but half of people complain because this is aotw again, and not enough egyptian bs. and nephren-ka and black seeds have too much egyptian bs and songwriting isn't "matured." that's mostly the criticism i've seen about their albums summed up.
I'd hate to be a metal musician tbh metalhead expectations are unreal sometimes.

I've only heard Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-ka and that was decent, but not enough to make me come back to this band. Sounds like they have a couple decent albums so maybe I should give them another shot.

To be completely honest, I'm not a person who knows a lot about Nile. Prior to listening to this album, I've only ever heard Annhilation of the Wicked and it's a really great album considering a lot of tech death albums nowadays are average at best.
Alright, fair enough.
If you've ever heard Nile before then you pretty much know what to expect.
...?
So you've only heard one album by these guys and yet you claim to know what the typical elements of their style are? Not convinced. What if this album and AOTW sound completely different from the rest of their discography and you just don't know because you haven't heard their other albums?

Meant to say this earlier but i thought beginning the review with admitting your limited experience with nile kinda got things off to a rough start. Might've been better to just simply say what you had to say about this without those details. Some might say it steals some credibility even if that's not necessarily true

Idk bro. I kinda included that just to clarify that I went into the album with an open mind and no bias at all.

I thought this was pretty great, definitely better than at the gates of sethu. I agree about the length, It is a problem with most Nile records though.

complaining a metal album is too long is almost the same thing as saying there are too many riffs on this album there should be less riffs.
|
| |
how is that the same at all please explain in great detail because it sounds like you're really
really reachin' there

I've heard demos that have more riffs than hour-long albums
|
| |
length can be an issue with any album of any genre, its a delicate balance between engagement and longevity

i'm not making a philosophical argument here, as there's none to be made. you add an extra song to an album, and it's got more riffs boom. i'm not debating song length to riff ratio because that's not quantifiable i'm speaking at a very basic level here.

i guess i get what u are saying

length can definitely be a problem tho if an album is not diverse or engaging enough to hold the listener. take an album that works well at 40 minutes long. adding more shit in the same vein to it can detract from the experience. if it feels right at 40 but you listen to another album that does the same shit over 60 mins, which one are you going to rather listen to?
