Still bummed that Defeater has grown so tepid and boring. Travels is one of the albums that expanded my musical horizons (I'm only 20 btw). I sincerely think they should either abandon the story concept or come up with a different POV that isn't a drunk who was a good man once. It worked on their first three releases but has worn thin. And they need to regain the ferocity and more layered instrumentals of Travels and Lost Ground. At this point I am just rambling. I just want to like their music again.

The music itself is fine just not great, there's nothing that sticks with me like Forgiver Forgetter, Red, White and Blues or Cowardice. They concept just makes it more obvious that they're not expanding their sound much.

yea this album has a couple decent tracks and that's it. the drumming is the only highlight. derek's lyrical themes are so played out it's ridiculous. i swear every song is about the same thing. and he actually uses the words throughout the whole record, which i have seen done and work before, but this just doesnt. unanswered, abandoned, dear father, hail mary, forgive me, etc....i really hope they can turn it around next album.
