then you still is gayyy...tthe way i see it, this is the mars volta album that you like the most if you don't really dig the mars volta...it's tame and a little too succinct...don't get me wrong it's banger, but when i think tmv, it's frances and amputechture, then everything else...

Frances is my favorite. And I'm a phanboi, so I'm not hating on Desperate Graves or anything, but I just don't see it as one of

their best. When I think tame and succinct, naturally I think of Octa, which I love. All of their albums serve different purposes for

me. Amp and Bedlam are the powerhouses.

i mean it's pretty clear on this they're sticking with a more straightforward and traditional (as traditional as prog really gets) approach with a somewhat present verse/chorus/verse/bridge structure, obvi playing around with it...with the rest of their albums, tracks are more expansive and, imo, take you to more places...i just think, to take a philosophical metaphor, this would be the more apollonian tmv while frances/amp/bedlam are the more dionysian tmv, basically fucking your ears with instrumentation/vocals...tmv is a band that tries to constantly achieve bliss but i think the concept works better in their epics than their eria tarka, etc...

Frances is the best, followed by this and Amp. Then Bedlam

Oct doesn't count cause it sucks, and I liked Scab Dates

Bedlam would be near perfect if they put Conjugal Burns after Goliath and ended it

It's way too damn long

I can definitely see what you mean, will. They've definitely progressed in interesting ways. But cut them some slack on their first LP, yeah?

For the record, Octahedron doesn't touch this in any way, though it's still a solid album.

are you for serious? Askepios, Agadez, and ouroboros are all barn burners...if they took out cavalgaytas (the worst tmv song ever), ended soothsayer like 4 minutes earlier, and ended the album with tourniquet man...shit would be elite...

edit to acorn...don't get me wrong, this was legitimately the only album i played for months when i first heard it (originally hating it bc "arg it's not at the drive-in") and growing to love it unconditionally, every second start to finish, with ambuletz as the last song as it should be, and overplay is one of the reasons im sure this lost appeal...but, at least to me, they grew up a lot
