The vocals are pretty good. I love them harsh wails like in Lustre. The songwriting not so much, but they do have potential if they'd just get serious about being a WoD clone.

I think Silver Flower pt 2 is better than Golden Number [2]

I think it is a pity that every artist making a black metal record with shoegaze/atmospheric effects actually needs to be compared to Deafheaven. This obsessive comparison I observed on the internet does not happen within other sub-genres.

this doesn't even sound that much like deafheaven outside of golden number. it sounds like pretty generic post-bm, which deafheaven often also happen to play.

It's Woods of Desolation more than it is Deafheaven imo. I mentioned Deafheaven more in the review (particularly the summary) because they're from the same country and that's what people were hyping Golden Number for sounding like (as far as I can remember) when it came out.

the critique was meant to be referring to a general trend present on the internet. The review only reminded me of it. I Of course I understand why the comparison is made, thought

the only things they rip from deafheaven are the things that deafheaven already ripped from everybody else

IDK, the more I listen the more they stand seem to stand on their own apart from DH ... especially now that New Bermuda is out.

This is just kind of a boring album though to be honest. It doesn't really create much atmosphere. I had a few spins of it then was never really compelled to hear it again.

it stands apart bc it's more WoD-y than deafheaven-y; I mention deafheaven a few times more in the review because of all the hype initially surrounding Golden Number and how other people all compared the band to them. You're better off just listening to Torn Beyond Reason than the 2-ish good tracks here :3

Yeah I prefer WoD to this for sure.

golden number is as good as anything deafheaven has ever written
