the middle section of the album seems to be pretty solid. enjoying it. a lot of the songs do sound very similar to the stuff they've put out in the last few years. so at first its kind of a blur.

Saw them live yesterday in Columbus and they put on one hell of a performance. Singer sounds even better live. I would definitely recommend spending the money to see them live. chill older crowd was nice especially since that is definitely not what I'm used to at concerts.

When did this go from a 4.2 review to a 4.0? I think personal ratings can change but review ratings should stay.

I decided to stop rating stuff in 0.1 increments. So everything got rounded.

Fair enough. It wasn't even a significant change of course, I was just curious.

Saw them at Merriweather Post Pavilion a few days ago, and it was the best concert I've been to. Colin Meloy is an absolute charmer. Excellent performances, musicianship, and audience. Well worth it.

Saw them back in '10 right after Hazards came out, fucking unforgettable

Yeah, Decemberists are definitely in my top 5 shows ever. When they brought out the whale in "Mariner's Revenge Song" I cried at the utter awesomeness.

That would have made it 1,000 times better, but in the moment their cheesy fake one was 10 kinds of perfect.

@theBoneyKing that caught me so off guard! The way they act out that song is hilarious

Needless to say, I am stoked to see them again at the Newport Folk Festival in July

I saw them a few years back and they did three encores. The crowd kept getting thinner, but louder than ever!

It won't leave you alone, it won't leave you alone.
I rate Hazards above any other Decemberists album, but this has a handful of very nice songs that can appear in my head at any time.

I actually think this is way more consistent than Hazards. The Wanting Comes in Waves is still their best song however.

I like the adventurous, theatrical side of the Decemberists. Their songwriting is so consistently excellent it is easy to get a little bored without a unifying theme for listening.

I love all sides of the Decemberists. The Americana kick they've been on just feels more organic for them though.

I wouldn't disagree with you there Sowing. I do feel like they have been taking the safe route for a bit too long however. I would be very sad never to have another Decemberists song longer than five minutes.
Edit: So I see that Lake Song from this album is near six minutes. Still, it's no The Wanting Comes in Waves, The Island, or Mariner's Revenge Song.

The Wanting Comes In Waves >>>
that may have been my favorite live performance by them, the crowd went crazy when the female vocals came in. Extremely impressed by the back up singer stealing the spotlight. She was incredible.

The Decemberists' Americana kick [2]
I love their older stuff to death but King is Dead is amazing and this isn't bad either.
